I was wondering what everyone paints by, and decided to set this poll up.

Film for me, seeing as how the majority of the figs are sculpts of the actors and I like trying to emulate the feel of the movies.

Good question, everyone has a different muse for inspiration. I prefer to paint based on the movies but always giving a personal touch to personalize my painting :)

Elladan: I paint by my own style. I look at PJ's films and GW miniatures for reference, but its mostly my own style.

Elrohir: I try to follow the films as much as possible, I like the colours and the feel, also I know what colours I will need, so I don't need to go testing and figuring out what looks good and what works.

Films for me...
I'd love to paint by the book, but since the models are inspired in the films, I paint by them.

I voted book, but also i look at the concept art in the Chronicles Books, which are excellent, so could have done with 2 votes

I tend to refer to the concept art more than the films, The Hobbit Chronicles books by Weta are utterly astounding and never fail to inspire me. :)

I use my imagination, and I go with geography as an inspiration for my own concepts

By numbers !!!

Seriously though, I did stick to paint schemes but I am now going for what I feel, it may fit a general colour scheme but the mixes for shades and highlights will be my own as I tend to use Scale 75 and Vallejo paints.

In general, by the films, but also with the aim firmly set on realism over artisticness/technique. In other words, the reason I don't do lots of highlighting or fancy bright colours is not so much because I can't, but because to me what makes the films is their gritty realism as much as anything else, so that's what I go for on the minis.

A mix of concept art, films and a dash of my own style.
