Ive looked around and have seen some decent stuff from companies but never amything that really catches my eye. Im not about to shell out cash for any of these units but I would like to get a few warbands minimum of these types of units.

Anyone have links or suggestions to anything good?
I know gw has some empire guys that look like good laketown militia but I also heard their proportions sucks.

Any help would be appreciated.

Im going to use Perry miniatures Armed Pilgrims as Laketown milita
https://www.perry-miniatures.com/produc ... lct7ur73n5

They match perfectly with Lotr metal range since they are done by same guys who made most of those :) Im going to get some of their civilians as well to crowd my Middle earth.

Warlord games have very affordable plastic box sets that might work as Dunlands / Ruffians, for example: http://store.warlordgames.com/collectio ... nt-britons
They also have large range of metal minis, check them out. Not as high quality / perfect match as Perry's. but still very nice.

Hope this helps!

A lot of people have been very keen on the Perry brothers agincourt archers for use as militia, the set comes with some bucklers and hand weapons, so it's possible to make melee units of it.

That should be very satisfying to people who think of the lord of the rings as very medieval. I personally imagine middle earth as more of a dark age/late antiquity setting, so I'm eagerly waiting for Agema miniatures to come out with their plastic Carthaginians.

Id say the first link is nice but out of my price range for profiles that are only a small amount of points. Id need a minimum two warbands.

But the second link, is perfect. Im a bit of a fan of warlord already anyway. Thanks man. Some day I now know where I can go for men of dunland.

I was about to post almost the exact same topic, then I saw this one! I've found quite a few Gripping Beast minis that are still not quite cheap, but far more affordable than GW's efforts. Most importantly (to me) they offer a wide range of variety within the force.

http://www.grippingbeast.com/product.php?ItemID=1928

http://www.grippingbeast.com/product.php?ItemID=1929

http://www.grippingbeast.com/product.php?ItemID=2579

http://www.grippingbeast.com/shop.php?CatID=302

http://www.grippingbeast.com/shop.php?CatID=31

And then the Perry Agincourt archers

https://www.perry-miniatures.com/product_info.php?products_id=3217&osCsid=f9lpkr39bp95v36dlct7ur73n5

I think these, mixed with a few blisters of real GW Lakemen and perhaps with some Men of Dale head/ weapon/ shield swaps would be awesome!

I'm a fan of warlord games celts and bretons in addition to the gripping beast dark age warriors. All great picks for what you want.

Another idea might be Wargames Factory unarmoured Saxons/Vikings:
http://www.wargamesfactory.com/webstore/hammer-of-the-gods/viking-bondi
http://www.wargamesfactory.com/webstore/hammer-of-the-gods/saxon-fyrd

32 minis for £15/$20ish from discounters is a great deal, and there looks to be a lot of variety available in the sprues, even more if you mix and match them a little. Paint them a little less brightly, maybe add a few more improvied weapons, and we could be on to a winner. I was planning on grabbing some of the Orcs and some armoured Vikings to use as Rohirrim Helmingas, looks like I'll be adding a box of these to the order list at some point.

Yeah, their Saxons could work pretty well. I have some of the Orcs and some Vikings and they scale pretty well with GW's offerings. I still think some head and weapon swaps would be in order as well as mixing in some minis with different styles of clothing, just to get that trading post "melting pot" vibe, but these are definitely a good starting point.

Though I also like wargames factory, their minis are a tad larger than gw's line. Just FYI. Still usable, just a bit bigger.

Thats ok. It will just make them look more like crazy evil hillmen that way. Plus a lot of those poses are dynamic so they look partially crouched.

Don't suppose I could trouble you for a scale shot with some GW and any WGF Vikings, Saxons or Orcs?

If he doesnt respond any time soon you can find some on this forum somewhere. Ill take a quick 5 minute look in the search for you in case youre not familiar.

EDIT: Here...I knew I did a photo post once.

Check it out.....this is a good comparison pics to some minis. Keep in mind those are large mordor minis. The vikings or whatever are larger than rohan foot troops pretty noticeably. I plan on using them on Sons of Eorl because they should be big beastly men compared with their stat line.

Just go down to my post. Their orcs are shorter than Vikings too.

Thanks, that's very helpful! The Orcs will fit right in by the looks of it, and I'll grab some Vikings for my Dunland plans. They may be a tad bigger than the Rohirrim, but if I basically phase those out (only got a Warband or two anyway) then then that looks like it'll be fine.

Sorry, I've been swampped with grad school. Not to be a jerk, as this is not my intent, but I recommend pursuing brown rings idea, I am unable to help at the moment. Sorry :(

No worries! I've found what I need to know, and I think they'll work for what I want them for. The next question is which one to do first; Laketown, Rohan or Dunland...

Corsairs work decent enough for ruffians/laketown militia, could use for wildmen too but that would require some greenstuff work and weapon swaps in my opinion.

Hi! Hope I'm not late to the party or anything here, but Tre Manor recently sculpted a lovely set of brigands that are pretty well in scale with LOTR models.
http://red-box-games.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=21

You have to scroll through, but models like Billhook Bob, Derek the Dim and various others make for excellent LOTR proxies. The minis might be a milimeter or so taller than the average Rohan Warrior, but the proportions are generally spot on for LOTR.
