Thranduil's Horse

As with all my posts, I don't know if this is in the right place but I noticed something in one of the Hobbit trailers. Gandalf rides through what appears to be Dale on a horse that looks exactly like the one Thranduil is riding on in his miniature. I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this but is it possible/likely that Thranduil was originally going ride this horse and when they changed him onto an elk they kept the horse (which presumably has to be specially trained) for Gandalf to ride on?

Yes, my guess is it too that this is the horse we see Gandalf riding on. I don't know if Thranduil was meant to ride on this one or not.
I understood the mo-cap for the elk has been done with a horse, but I don't know if it's this horse. I believe that horse was called Moose, but don't know if that was a joke or not.

I keep forgetting that horse is bay in the pictures. Mine's going to be white and this must be so firm in my mind already seeing it bay surprises me every time lol

Ahh, but do you have pictures of Elves with gravity defying cloaks billowing out or a rider with a cloak as wrinkled as Thranduil's seams to be? Gandalfs cloak seams to behave itself pretty good and remain flat, I know it is of different material, but the cloaks on elven Cav models just always flapping around like a wounded Legolas.

I take it the cloak is what makes the difference between an elf and a Wizard. And it seems it takes a Mirkwood Elf to master that particular skill :-D

Strictly speaking, Gandalf isn't wearing his cloak while riding that horse, just his robes. It would be weird if his robes were to billow like Thranduil's cloak, because then audiences would need to become acquainted with Mr. Mckellen's backside, and while I'm sure we all honour his status, I don't think any of us are quite ready to make that commitment yet.
