Stripping Gulavhar Whole

Hi, does anyone know how to strip a large model that would require a large container, without having to use lots of liquid to soak it in?

Also, is there a way of stripping (I've never done it before) that doesn't weaken the super glue?

And finally, what do people mean by "Dettol", I know it is a brand, but I'm irritated by the vague answer of "use Dettol for stripping". Every time I ask what is meant, I am either ignored, or given an equally vague reply. Can someone help?

Use nail polish remover, it strips paint from metal very quickly and 99p stores etc stock it in bottles of 500ml so getting enough top strip a big boy ain't hard.

If you use Nail Polish remover (as I do) remove all plastic from the model! The plastic will be eaten.

you could also Google the word Detol. DETTOL comes up as a brand name of cleaning products. I assume it is a lot like Simple Green in affect on mini's. So USA get Simple Green, UK get DETTOL.

answer about the glue, umm, I expect you may have to re glue it, it may or may not break your bond, but I would err on the side of expecting it.

I'm in the UK and I know Dettol is cleaning product, I mean do you mean Dettol handwash, Dettol washing up liquid, Dettol shower gel, Dettol talcum powder for all I know?

Thanks for the replies. Must be a weird feeling to walk into a store as a guy to buy nail polish remover, but it must be done.

I hope that doesn't weaken the glue though, it took literally years to get it to finally stay intact.

The Dettol to use is called "Antiseptic Disinfectant". It is a brown liquid that comes in bottles from 250ml to 750ml. Do NOT dilute it by adding water. Simply cover the miniature and leave it to soak. I have only done overnight as otherwise I'm too impatient.

Works excellent on plastic and metal without causing damage but use a toothbrush to scrape it off and get any that has been caught in the grooves. It is less effective when dirty so I would suggest removing the model and tipping some of the liquid into another container to do the "scrubbing" (enough to swish the model around in and a bit more if doing multiple models).

Brown dettol is available in supermarkets here in Australia, namely Woolworths (safeway) and coles (coles-myer group). Dettol can loosen glue, though you still need to put some effort into taking the mini from its slot. The amount it loosens depends on how much surface area of the glue it is touching and how strong the bond was (how much plastic/metal) the mini was touching. It will turn PVA to goop, so they will need to be cleaned and re-done.

I hope that is sufficient information for you, let me know if there is more. I picked up some simple green yesterday so I will let you know the results on that one.

For the future reference of others needing more details, there should be sufficient information if you search dettol on these forums.

to keep the super glue intact, dip a Qtip into the nail polish remover and scrub the paint off section by section. this will take longer than soaking it but you can avoid dissolving the glue with this method

If you use nail polish remover, be careful!
Do not buy theone with acetone, it doesn't work.
But acetone free nail polis remover works wonders!
I use that last one all the time for my second hand metals.

I will have to strip my balrog soon, and similar to your gulavhar model, I'd rather not take it apart. As my balrog is a plastic model, I'll be using Dettol instead of nail polish remover, but I was probably going to try something similar to the method given in the quote, dip a toothbrush in the liquid and just scrub. I'd try that if I were you, so you can completely avoid the glue joints, or at least minimise the time the joints are in contact with the liquid.

I tried using simple green on 2 minis - It worked mostly on the Minas Tirith captain but didn't remove the gold from the sword hilt and there is a bit of black in the grooves like hair and shield.
It didn't work as well on the Knight of Dol Amroth so I have left it to soak more. The knight had a thicker paint job, but I would have expected Dettol to get it off ok. From what I can see & what I have read, SG has a harder time getting the undercoat off.

Anyway, so far it looks like simple green is ok - its cheaper and can do the job if you give it time. Also you have to scrub a bit more to get it off. For now I'll stick with Dettol - less work, a bit faster and more reliable but costs more.
