For anyone interested, there are a couple of tournaments already organised for the new year.

Fly Casual - Titans - London - 12/01/14

It's a Trap! - Dreamlike Gaming - Mansfield - 11/01/14

I'll be at the Titans one hoping to repeat my 3rd place finish 8)

Well, the first load arrived, and I have to say, I am very impressed with the minis and how well they are painted. The detail for such a small scale (roughly 1:270) is fabulous. I have been poring over the rules and the range of possibilities afforded by the range of pilots available for each ship, each vessel's characteristics, and the range of options and add-ons that can upgrade the firepower and other aspects of its performance.
I also have to admit, I make the engine noises...

I also found this little site: http://xwing-builder.co.uk/build

Ok, I started playing using the quick start rules just to get the feel of it, and used only the 3 fighters from the starter box: Skywalker's X-Wing versus 2 Black Squadron TIE fighters. It took about 10 rounds (I lost count in the excitement) but the farmboy from Tatooine splashed both TIE fighters after only getting hit once (the Force was definitely on his side).
For game 2, I added the second starter box fighters, so it was Skywalker plus a Red Squadron in X-Wings versus 4 Black Squadron TIE fighters. The Imperials tried concentrating 3 on the Red Sqdn X-Wing with the 4th just harassing Skywalker. The X-Wings damaged 2 of the TIE's early on but in all the twisting and turning, numbers and agility began to count for the Empire. That and the most consistently pants sequence of Rebel dice rolls in history...
Skywalker splashed one of the damaged TIE's, just before the other 3 annihilated his wingman and turned their attentions to him. Round after round, at least 2 TIE's managed to get shots at him and nearly always caused 1 additional damage, so about round 15 or so, Luke was fireballed, leaving the Empire with 3 TIE's (2 of them damaged).
Lousy die rolls both when attacking and being attacked were instrumental in the Rebel defeat. Positioning and relative positioning were what allowed the Empire's numerical advantage to take a cumulative toll, as there was nowhere that at least one TIE could not fire upon the Rebels.
I will increase the numbers again today and see what 3 versus 6 results in (hoping for more die roll equality); then I will start on the core rules, and eventually, bring in the other ship types - really looking forward to the Millennium Falcon!

Look what is coming in April 2014:

Ok - not cheap but very well prepainted, large in proportion to the other minis and who doesn't want the starship that was the first thing seen flying across the screen in the original Star Wars?

I've been playing the Star Trek version of this game with my son. He loves it!

I hear the mechanics are similar though the ST vessels are larger and more capable than the fighters that form the bulk of the X-Wing minis. I like the ruleset and mechanics which are straightforward but afford many options according to ship type and the special abilities of some pilots.

Hey all If you want to get into the game I suggest Miniatures Market. They are based in St. Louis MO but ship free 99 and over the have GW products at 20% off but you have to download the newest product list from their page. They have all X-Wing Miniatures on their page for 1/3 of the price or 33.3333% ect. For example all 15 dollar expansions are 10, all 30 are 20, The corvette instead of 90 is 60 and the transport is 40 instead of 60, also the core set is 26 instead of 40. Great prices.

Great for anyone in the US but with postage/shipping plus import tariffs, better to look for places closer to home for most of us.

There are times I wish Target were in the UK too... especially when I hear of minis at half-price :) I am hoping to pick up some more starter sets later to build up the numbers slightly, but I am also looking at acquiring multiples of the other fighters - some are coming in February (TIE-Interceptor double set) and then in April, the big ones!

Well, I finally picked up the starter set and can’t wait to get my first few games in.

It feels so weird to buy a game that is relatively mainstream in the board game/miniature universe.

I know - lots more fighters. I had a good look at them on the FFG site, read some of the blurbs. Stealth fighter - hmm. This could get really interesting :)

Couldn't resist anymore, ordered the starter with some additional ships, to be able to field:
Rebels: Falcon (pilot: Han) and X-Wing (Skywalker) for 75 points, versus
Empire: TIE Advanced (Vader) and 3 TIE Fighters (Howlrunner, Backstabber and an Academy Pilot), also exactly 75 points.

Will of course be able to change the pilots in favour of some upgrades to get plenty of variety already (not to mention different possibilities for smaller games). And not unimportantly: just an additional starter away from a full 100pts fleet!

Not sure about points at present (too lazy to run downstairs to look them all up) but the current fleets stand at:
9 TIE
1 TIE-Advanced
1 TIE-Bomber
1 Lambda Shuttle
1 Slave-1
versus
5 X-Wing
2 Y-Wing
1 A-Wing
1 HWK-290
1 Millennium Falcon
I am eyeing up more but the store is awaiting stock, and I am salivating at the prospect of the Tantive-IV and the Transport, not to mention the 4 Wave-4 ships.
And I really like being able to unwrap something and start gaming with it immediately!

Annoucement: REBEL ACES :D :D

http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=4705

For those that havent seen, FFG have just announced a Rebel aces expansion pack which includes a A-wing & B-wing in alternate paint schemes. Probably looking at 6 months before it is released but still :D :D love b-wings.

Also, was bored the other day so took some photos of my combined fleets. Since taking the photos I have got a shuttle and am waiting on my 2 Imperial Aces boxes to arrive.

Curse you Dag and Southy for bringing this up! Those ships alone have me wanting to play the game. Luckily, my main draw would have been Y-Wings and apparently they're not being made anymore? Thank goodness, I may have just dodged a very expensive bullet...

Where can we hope to find them here in Canada? At Target like in the US? Uh-oh, I have a bad feeling about this...

FFG tend to reprint the ships in cycles. There are plenty of y-wings in stock in the uk.
