I just can't see them not making Smaug though. It would be such an opportunity wasted on their part in terms of sales. He would be an extremely popular mini without a doubt. Has to happen.

I don't think he would be that popular. Even if they scaled him down to 24 inches that's a very large mini on the gameboard for just two or three scenarios. Probably around 200 pounds to buy if forgeworld did it, so not within everybody's price range either.

Totally agree that it would not be great to use in a gaming sense. But surely people would buy it just to have the model itself whether to use it for the SBG or not. I would definitely get it either way just to have Smaug in all his glory!

I too hope for a decent smaug model. Adding him in with Sauron, and the Balrog as what is (for me) that top tier of units

I was talking to a GW staffer about the Hobbit yesterday, and the topic of Smaug came up. Naturally, I asked him if he thought that there would be a mini of Smaug, and his answer was interesting. He said no, and followed it up with the fact that as part of the new licence with MGM, all models had to be precisely to scale to what is seen in the film (this would also explain the chunky new Legolas). They calculated a Smaug miniature would have to be 38 inches long, and that's not even factoring in the wingspan.

So I'm not holding my breath

Lego always tend to get their releases out first, it will be interesting to see if they bring a Lego Smaug out and what size it is. I can't see them doing a 3 to 4ft Smaug!

After watching the film, I think the scenarios from the DoS book were probably all originally in the big hardback (except the 3 part battle) and that they are based on an earlier script as they don’t all seem to match too well with the final cut of the film.

Completely agree, that's all but confirmed by Azog's presence at the Barrels out of Bond scenario. I also remember Adam saying at TOS in Jan 2013 that he was gutted that one didn't make the first book as it was his favourite scenario he'd ever written with orcs and elves jumping all over barrels, it's clearly the same one. As someone has said elsewhere there were meant to be 12 scenarios in the first book (7 + 5 = 12). And finally, film 1 (when there were only 2 films) was meant to end with the Barrel escape which is where the scenarios end. There have clearly been no new scenarios written for Desolation of Smaug, only the three-part Dimril Dale one that was from AUJ. As Creaky says it's almost enough to start me worrying again although the presence of the Laketown models is a nice reassurance.

Is it even confirmed that is what they are going to be called? They could be Orcs of DolGuldur and then there will be another set of orcs called Gundabad Orcs for the 3rd film. Probably wishful thinking.

Lego's been calling them Gundabad Orcs, and they actually tend to be fairly accurate regarding names. I don't have the rulebook yet (might be a Crimbo prezzie), so can't confirm.

It's all there in the sourcebook, they're 100% Gundabad orcs and they have Gundabad orc captains leading them. Nice models IMO but, as many others have suggested, it's hard to imagine they will be anything other than 10 a box as have been all the latest Hobbit releases (Dale, Rangers, Palace Guard).

Saw the film. Would love some Gundabad orcs! And i actually want Tauriel and Legolas.

The film has compounded my disappointment with the spiders. They should be plastic, a third of the price and actually look like the spiders in the film!

Surely that would rule out any Smaug merchandise that wasn't stand alone.

I assumed that it was only referring to GW's deal. Although, having said that, there hasn't actually been any Smaug merch (although that's probably to do with them keeping his design so tightly under wraps)

I've noticed quite a few mentions of the Most Audacious Fellow bonus. I assume this is in the BRB (I have the EfGT book, which I don't think has it) and I'm wondering what this bonus is.

It allows models to regain more m/w/f if you are linking the hobbit scenarios.

So what's left to be released for sure?

From the DOS book -

Beorn in Bear form
Palace guard captain
Palace guards
Bard the Bowman
Girion
Master of laketown
Alfred
Laketown guard captain
Laketown guards

Gundabad captain
Gundabad warriors

New Gandalf
Anything else?

Whens the new WD out, next week?

Any day now we should see the 40k fans posting photos of the Tyranid releases. If we're lucky, we might glimpse a pixelated, cut off bit of some hobbit kits in the corner of the photo of the stuff they actually want to see.

Who's betting the Gundabad Orc will be coming in a box of 8 for £25 given Gw's track record and the fact that each Orc is as tall as Azog and includes pikes?

I'm guessing the Gundabad Orcs will come in boxes of 12. I just got the DoS book today, and in the third Dimrill Dale scenario it requires 36 Gundabad Orcs. Expensive though they are, GW tends to build its scenarios around the composition of their boxes/blisters.

GW would not drop the numbers of their models in a box to 8 - they are dumb, but not that dumb.

If I was a gambling man (which I am not) I'd wager it will be 10 per box. That seems to be the norm with all the new Hobbit range. And the Gundabad orcs are huge too, jostling for space on a small sprue.
