I stumbled on to this on theonering.net - apparently the extended edition has been given its film rating and it says it will be released in time for the holidays - I am not sure which holidays they are referring to.
More here:
http://www.theonering.net/torwp/2013/06 ... en-rating/
If anyone knows which press release they are referring to we might get a better date on the release. I found this snippet:
http://screenrant.com/hobbit-extended-e ... ease-date/
Which seems to indicate Christmas or maybe Thanksgiving.

Two months ago, Warner Bros. released a preview calendar of upcoming releases in 2013 which also mentioned an extended edition of the first Hobbit entry An Unexpected Journey. It was due in the 4th quarter of 2013 and we also reported about it. Just one day after that, Warner rowed back and issued a statement declaring that the plans for the extended edition weren't final. They then deleted it from their calendar.

After that, it took quite some time until that topic came back on the agenda and this time, Peter Jackson himself confirmed the longer version while being at the screening on the Butt-Numb-A-Thon film marathon in Austin. He said that the extended edition will be released and will feature 20 to 25 additional minutes. This leads up to a final running time of roughly 189 or 194 minutes for the first film.

If nothing has changed with the release schedule of Warner Bros, the extended version of An Unexpected Journey could be expected in late 2013, shortly before The Desolation of Smaug will start in cinemas

You know, just the other day I was thinking to myself "Yeah, this Hobbit movie is alright, but really it needs to be longer".

Extended edition!

:boromir [Sean Bean voice] So it is true... [/Sean Bean dies]

I knew to hold out of getting AUJ dvd, just wasn't sure they would make an extended version. Glad I'm finding out this news only just now. I'll get it at first release. Thought there will be none because how can they make extended versions based on a single book when they originally planned on only two movies and then extended it into a trilogy.

I haven't watched the Hobbit since it was at the cinema (where I watched it twice) as I've been saving it for the extended edition.

I love the LOTR ones so much. Not just for the film but for the epic documentaries too.

Because its not just the Hobbit, it includes the appendices at the back of Return of the King as well as explaining what Gandalf does for 3 chapters (that he disappears in the book). There's also the difference between literature and film according to Mr. Ian Mckellen, "Tolkien writes: 'and the battle went on.' This is a single sentences yet could take up an hour on screen." It will simply go into more depth.

Just noticed the extended version seems to be available from iTunes UK now.

EDIT: After watching the extended clips from YouTube I’m pretty happy with the theatrical version I already have. I don’t think it really adds anything and in fact detracts from the film by adding more clutter. A few of the scenes are good, but overall I prefer the non-extended.
