What I feel was the problem back in the day was that nobody actually made any effort to keep the big communities together. Let's look at Warhammer or 40k, they have their own leagues, player run tournaments, huge following, in almost every country. LotR on the other hand was sustained in Poland on this level (over 100 tournaments a year with over 700 registered players at its peak). The UK scene had 2 GTs per year and nobody bothered to make it into something bigger, once the slump started the game almost died. I take the same responsibility for decline of LotR at least in the UK as every other player should - laziness. However, there is hope at least for the scene of this country, the newly created UK Independent Great Hobbit League and Theodred, you should join and get everyone you know to join in too. There have been currently 2 tournaments within the league, there are 6 more planned for this year and hopefully even more for next year.
The GW may not support the game as much as we'd like them to, but the hobbists/players are also to blame for the decline in the game's popularity.
