I've been browsing GW's alot lately and have noticed that The Hobbit SBG is the main Tolkien game featured. LOTR SBG though basically the same game but different figures is a minuscule subsection of the Hobbit SBG. I mean, seriously the Lord of the rings will always be a far more superior film set compared to the hobbit, no matter how well PJ makes the last two films.
I could rant on for hours :-X but was just wondering whether new LOTR, not hobbit, models would be released by GW somewhere in the future. :?

I think GW is milking the Hobbit right now (as any company in their right mind should do) and won't be making any LOTR related minies in a while. But its all part of the same universe so I think separating the two things will be making a mistake.

I really doubt it, to be honest... there isn't really anything left to release from the lore they have the rights to (GW don't have the rights to the Silmarillion and the other, non-LotR/Hobbit works afik), is there?

I imagine GW will concentrate on the Hobbit minis until the films end but "whither then... I cannot say".

I agree entirely but just hope they make some LOTR models soon

It is always possible to re-release some older miniatures.
There are sculpts that could be better.

But I agree that GW is and will be milking The Hobbit the next 2 years.

Monotone_Matt- I disagree, if you flick through the book there are plenty of characters that GW haven't covered from LOTR and I was thinking they could make lots of sets of Bree-Men, the men in scouring of the shire into a new army.

My advice is to ensure you have all the LotR figures you need before the Hobbit series of films is complete. I think that these ranges will slip into the Specialist Games category fairly shortly after that. The LotR ranges are already off the shelves of GW stores.

Not looking forward to this! :( GW only has to briefly look at this site to see how big the fan base is!

Yeah, hate to be a pessimist but I fear this hobby's days are numbered...

You only have to look at 40k fan sites to see how much bigger the fanbases are over lotr. The 40k events at WHW always sell out almost instantly while the lotr don't.

Patience, patience. Several of the figures you like from lord of the rings may very well get an update because of the hobbit (see the eagles for example, but also the spiders, forest elves, etc.).

And guess what is going to happen after the hobbit is over?

People are going to see that the hobbit made x billion dollar and will get the movie rights for the Silmarillion. At that point it's only a matter of time before Games Workshop gets their hands on the rights for that as well.

Unfortunately it is down to profitablilty and they make alot more more money on 40k and Fantasy as they don't have to given anyone else a cut of the profits.

Pretty sure they already compensate for this with their prices. The plastics/finecast of the hobbit range are generally a lot more expensive than their own lines.

I assume we might see some new finecast re-releases. We might even see some "thematic" releases of "missing" figures.

We might, for example, see Woodmen figures to go with the Hobbit film. But since the Woodmen also, assumably, had their own battles in the War of the Ring, we might see some generic Woodmen for use with "later" battles. A better example might be the Beornings - they don't exist during the Misty Mountain quest, but they are a major power in Wilderland by the War of the Ring. So maybe some Beorning warriors to go with LOTR armies, only "inspired" by the Hobbit film.

Beyond all that, the Rhovanion northmen are one of the few groups left untouched by the LOTR range thus far. (The men from the Scouring of the Shire have already been done). Even then, you're already drifting down the long tail of product obscurity.

No. They won't. It's not for sale. Christopher Tolkien will not license it. And even when he dies, I'd say the estate will be a bit iffy about what they license. The whole story of the LOTR movie license is a bit weird and fraught, and really doesn't work in the Tolkien family's favour. Which means that any future other-media spinoffs will happen very slowly, involve a lot of lawyers, a lot of caveats and will likely not directly involve Saul Zaentz company. Thus we might vaguely see a film of the Children of Hurin a long time from now. No, really, a very long time. Way out of the timescale of this product line.

Since GW's primary license comes from Saul Zaentz, and their secondary one from Warner Brothers (there's a separate license they have from the Tolkien estate, but the estate just issues these things because they may as well make some money from the curate's egg they are stuck with), they'd have to negotiate with yet another entity with a different set of requirements.

So, short version: do not hold your breath.

Well I was thinking of this and I can say that it's still to early to say whether they release any LOTR minis. Right now GW is just riding the wave of Hobbit so we can definately say that the next couple of years we will see a lot of hobbit releases.

After the films end we will see if GW will give us any LOTR minis or not.

I firmly believe (just my opinion) that GW treats LOTR and HOBBIT as two seperate games at least considering the forces and they will continue to release more hobbit minis for now setting aside LOTR.

If that is true is really shame because there are still so many characters or just events that are mentioned in the books of LOTR and yet we haven't seen any of these events released as minis. Hell if they run out of ideas they can just copy characters from video games ie the watcher in the water I firmly believe that they took him from battles for middle earth because he has very very similar rules to that video game character (poops out of nowhere and the tentacles)

Money makes the world go 'round my friend and somewhere down the line somebody in the Tolkien family is going to be scratching their head, wondering what they could do with some extra millions.

I'm not saying it'll be soon, but it will eventually happen.

No. =D

EDIT: Probably should post more than just that, I updated our range sheets today with the latest from Games Workshop, and (along with a ton of Fantasy stuff) quite a few MORE LOTR models are now direct only, soon to fade into obscurity.

Let's look on the bright side: in 10-20 years when GW is only churning out its own IPs, our collections will be worth loads :p

I can't imagine they will remove any of the LOTR minis from the website any time soon. At least until 2017 when the license runs out, or in 2015 after the release of the final hobbit film.
