White Dwarf is being reborn on 22nd September, see http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/wnt/blog.jsp?pid=4200016 for more details.

22nd September also happens to be Bilbo and Frodo’s birthday and the day after the 75th anniversary of The Hobbit being published. I wonder if this is just a coincidence or whether it might all point to a first look at what GW are planning for The Hobbit. The Hobbit Annual is already out so some of The Hobbit merchandise is started to be released.

I know it is also the day before Games Day UK so that my be the real reason for the timing. Still you never know.

perhaps they are entirely taking out the LOTR in it and instead, making a magazine dedicated to LOTR like the old deagosti BGiME's

The new team looks good, the new editor of White Dwarf was the editor of BGiME. I get the impression that Dan Harden is a fan of middle earth and I know Adam Troke is too, so plenty of middle earth fans in the new White Dwarf team.

Hopefully reborn means we will have an actual magazine now with tactics, collecting and modelling information being the main bulk rather than it being the glorified catalogue it is now. It seems unlikely as GW would want to sell the most model it can so the glorified catalogue idea would be best for them but it is possible that the White Dwarf sales are dropping given how many people including me have stopped buying it because of that very reason so a rebirth or resurrection of the previous gaming/modelling format that sold much better may be best for GW

Don't like the idea of a BGIME style magazine to cover LOTR.
Ok, the scenery tutorials were quite nice but the magazine ran for like two years and it always kept that style and tone of a tutorial for beginners. I didn't even bother to read the magazines after issue 3-4, too basic and lame...

LOTR dedicated magazine, great!
BGIME style and quality,blegh!

I don't think the new White Dwarf will be anything like BGiME. I don't think there will be a dedicated Lord of the Rings magazine either.

However if there are a good number of LotR fans in the White Dwarf team, we should get good coverage.

A special LotR/TH section in WD makes more sense.

That's the thing, back in the day the WD articles convinced me to get into Warhammer and 40K. I was enthralled by the battle reports and ongoing columns. Now, those things are rare. It is almost entirely dedicated to "this is what's out this month. You want to buy it."

I think that BGiME got better over time, and although I've never been a player of the game (that was my boys) my impression was they grew over the complete series and by the end of the run they were doing some quite advanced things including game board creation and connected scenarios. It was designed for people new to gaming and I think it succeeded in introducing quite a few people to the hobby, attracted by the LOTR theme.

I agree!
This would be my approach if I wanted to put "new life" into LOTR.
I can't see a magazine dedidcated to just LOTR, especially how WD have been slowing moving away from LOTR...

BGiME is what got me into the hobby. It was a very effective way of introducing new players. It started with the basic and it led you to the very advanced in a smooth and easy to follow manner.

It was not promoted in the US as far as I know. I would have had to some how find out about it in order to get it from over seas.. The same with the White Dwarf it is not on the news stand so how exactly an I going to find out about the new releases in time to order them :?: How much is a White Dwarf :?: I have not looked at one in so long I don't know :!: I do know the Reaper catalog is free. :-D

GW did not own or produce BGiME. They outsourced it to another company.

I hope they get back to the building and painting articles that first attracted me to the magazine. Lately all they have is their own stuff.....which is bloody expensive. What happened to the foam terrain models they used to build?

Someone previously stated that the magazine has become a glorified catalogue. Nothing could be closer to the truth.

So I am hoping....that this reboot.....is going to be better than the current state of WD. I may even get a subscription again.

Well said Azog!

As for the new WD, I am eager to see how it turns out. I never understood the catalog type presentation WD embraced...with people all having access to the internet, catalogs are just an outdated media. Bring on those hobby related articles!! :)

As long as the new White dwarf has more than 2 pages of LOTR/Hobbit, then i will buy a few. I like looking at the pictures in battle reports, particilary if new and old models are mixed.

I know everything GW or any large company says must be taken with a pinch of salt but this seems very promising

''I don't want to give too much away ahead of you actually seeing the magazine...... what should the Battle Report actually do? What should it show? What is the focus? These are the types of questions we threw at everything in the magazine, and the results allow us to explore collecting, painting, modelling and gaming in greater depth than ever before.''
