Orc have that battle host where they get 18 companies armed with all equipment. Does this mean that they can use shields and 2 handed weapons at the same time? It doesn't make sense but I can't find anything contradicting it.

It's 12 to 18 by the way.

I think they can use shields and 2-handers at the same time yes. And if they don't move too far bows as well, all three.

The WotR rules often allow for absurdities like that. They even have a rule for cavalry using 2-handers even though they would have no hands to hold on to their reins, and there arwen't any models arned that waay anyway. Then you have Arbalesters and Vault Wardens as further proof to more than one piece of Wargear, and there's Galadgrim with glaives and shields.

was looking at older artikels:

Mordor:
- The gorgoroth horde (a 12-18 company formation of orcs, with potentially multiple captains and all weapon options considered to be had by the formation - sword/shield, bow, two-handed weapons)

I think you have to choose each fight phase which weapon you want to use, Shields or 2HW.

The mongols and many calvary based armies used their legs to guide the horses so they could use a bow or another two handed weapon on horseback

I would have to say that shooting from horseback would be MUCH harder than swinging a big ax on horseback.

There's justification for the Orcs using 2-handed weapons and shields at the same time too if you want it, it is an example. The Mongols must've blinded and deathened their horses (not literally) then.

The justification for the Orc Horde: each company represents a number of soldiers, it could be that some were holding shields and other two-handed weapons. After a while when they get bored, the Orcs may swap their weapons around, unless they were killed first.

The idea is that you have say 200 Orcs, and 80 carry shields, and another 80 carry 2HW, and the other 40 bows (for example), so they can choose who they put in the front line, the shields, the 2HW or the bows.

Or they could put 20 shields, 20 2HW and 5 bows in the front.

Which would end in total chaos, als weapons find the holes in the shieldwall (the 2HW & bows), and there are too few twohanders or archers to make a difference, which means they might as well have taken nothing at all.

Since when do orcs care about total chaos.

Try it yourself, it isn't that hard, just keep your horse at the same speed all the time, and don't make it jump

Let me rephrase: Shooting ACCURATELY from horseback, while galloping about the battlefield avoiding arrows and enemies, is harder than swinging a big ax.

Not if you're both a skilled archer, aswell as a skilled horserider

what does this have to do with WotR? lol.

With the battlehost, the controlling player declares what weapon he wants to use at the start of each fight phase. If he wants to shoot, he can but has to follow the usual rules for shooting. So you can have all 18 companies firing if you wanted to (although most would be support shots).

Are you a skilled horseback archer? @Southern Dunedain, this came from the fact that WotR has rules for cavalry with 2HW, but no unit that actually uses them.

Well, I'm a horserider and pretty good archer too, and I've fired from horseback a couple of times. I'm planning on training that skill.

Cool, just try it from the back of a galloping horse before you say whether it's hard or not.

Well, I've never fired while in gallop, but I have tried in draff or how it is called in english. It's way harder than on foot, but I still got bullseye once.
