Did a new rulebook come out? I have the one from the mines of Maria and it says nothing about war bands or nothing.

I think it says it's from 2005

There isn't. New rulebook, but there are new sourcebooks that work in conjunction with the rulebook. They explain the warband system.

I got really confused when it first changed.

When selecting your force, for each Hero you include, you may take up to 12 Warriors from the Hero's own list (lists are also in the new sourcebooks). This is a warband.
Warbands are also deployed each at a time in the new generic scenarios, but they have no effect when the game first has begun.
Hope this helped.

They have new and changed profiles, armybuilding rules, and scenarios. They make Lome absolete. The core rules are all the same for now, though it's quite possible a new rule-book will come out with the hobbit stuff.

This is incredibly helpful, I'll probably still use my old little diary sized rulebook and its rules untill it catches on in the pacific northwest, there is no use in buying so much when no one plays :(

The warband system is really great to work with, though it has some problems with the Mordor book (or my humble opinion) with making the drummers have to take the place of heroes in some of the warbands. But either system is good to work with. Now my question is did GW release war of rings because they realized what a colossial mistake the last edition of warhammer was...

Mordor Orc and Black Guard Drummers have always been heroes, this has nothing to do with the Warbands system.

That's all you need for the rules. The new books are profiles and army configuration (war bands) only.

Yeah, I'm in Portland but there aren't really many players here. If you're ever in town on other business, feel free to drop me a PM and we could get a game in.

Another question how does the warband system affect deployment? Did they create new deployment rules in terms of how close you deploy?

@ring_of_gyges- what army do you play? I have a wotr sized minith tirith army

The deployment rules are specific to the 6 generic scenarios that come with the new books. In general it's more likely you'll start at least one warband close to combat.

I've got big Mordor and Minas Tirith armies (~100 painted models each) for SBG, but I never really got into WotR.
I've got a decent sized Moria army and a small Dwarven army.
I'm currently working on Isengard and Rohan, I've got plenty of models but not many are painted.
Bits and bobs of everything else.

Drop me a line if you're ever in town. I have a brother in Seattle, so I head up that way from time to time.
