If you're looking to fill very thin lines, you might try the liquid green stuff GW sells.

I used to use blu tac before I found the wonders of GS

As others have mentioned, milliput is another two part epoxy that can be used, there are different grades though, stick with the yellow or white. There is also an epoxy made by gale force 9 which is grey and works well, dries harder than green stuff. These are good for adding sculpted features and gap filling.

There is modelers putty, which is usually white and comes in a tube, does shrink a bit upon drying. Testors makes a red putty which works better as it does not shrink as much. Neither of the puttys are good for sculpting. There is also green putty but I have never used it.

One could probably use some style of carpenters putty but I think it would depend on what you were doing. Watch out for some of the builders epoxies as they can cure very fast.

It completely depends what you use it for. I would always recommend Greenstuff over most other materials (don't even have to buy it from GW, look on heresy miniatures and sites like that, can get 36" of it quite cheap). Liquid Greenstuff is fantastic, brilliant for filling gaps.

If you're sculpting, then Milliput is ok for large areas, but can't really hold detail as it's rather crumbly when dry Procreate is another good sculpting material, I found it harder to mix so went back to the good old Greenstuff

But I use ProCreate quite a bit, for gap filling mostly, but also for my feeble attempts at sculpting. I get it from Eureka Minis - http://eurekamin.com.au/product_info.ph ... ts_id=9904
Ebob sells sets of sculpting tools while Eureka sells a number of shaping tools - rubber tipped for smoothing out the putty (they are excellent).

procreate is a decent alternative but greenstuff is often the best there is

Pro create. I highly recommend it. It is better than greenstuff in my opinion.
