and it was more fun than I thought. I had two copies of Return of the King Rulebook so we played Scenario #1 with whats in the box. I quickly realized my terrain is quite inadequate since I built it for WoTR which is not urban combat (wide-open for the most part). Luckily I had a box full of marble off-cuts so I pulled off the ruins of Osgiliath with several barriers, built exactly as the map in the book. I won both matches by 3 models but its not as one-sided as some WoTR matches I've had so I'll be playing it more regularly. I definitely need to change gears on terrain building since SBG is much more detailed.

You mean to say you played WotR before SBG? Thats weird (no offence to you)

Glad you had fun playing the older ghame.

Indeed, that is rather odd that you did WotR before SBG, but welcome to the other method! And SBG can be quite a lot of fun indeed- hope that you continue to enjoy!

Wierd ya. I got into WotR when my friend had a battle in his garage and I started buying models by the 100's off Craigslist before even visiting a Games Workshop. I got a few Campaign books in the process but never the full rules book. After reading some discussion over WotR vs SBG I wanted to give it go and odd enough I'm the only one in my group that has SBG rules so I finally pushed it in.

I think we will be playing it for the next month and then go from there as to whether to buy the core rules and the supplements.

Wow. I am genuinely impressed. SBG does have a number of elements to it that WotR does not- but ultimately one could sum it up by saying that WotR focuses most upon the armies as a whole, upon entire races, while SBG focuses upon the individuals, the mighty deeds of the individual heroes. Or their abysmal days on the battlefield.

I'd love to play the battle of the pellenor fields in SBG with as mch models as in the Wotr rulebook scenario, that would be truly awesome!

Several friends and I got together and did, or attempted to do something quite similar to that (actually we've had a number of epic-scale SBG battles). We had three Mumaks, 1000 pts of Grey Company (we didn't include the 'major' named heroes in any of the points costs- Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Elladan+Elrohir, Imrahil, Eomer, Theoden, Merry, Eowyn, Witch-king on Fellbeast, Khamul on Fellbeast, Gothmog, one troll chieftain- that's most of them, I think), 1000pts of Dol Amroth and Gondor, around 850-900pts of Rohirrim (and I bought a number of them for the battle!). All that against the aforementioned 3 Mumakil, two fellbeasts, at least five trolls, and around 3500-4000pts worth of Easterlings, Haradrim, and orcs of all sorts.

It was truly an epic battle (that lasted for around 7 hours) and resulted in the Dol Amroth force dying to a man, Rohan escaping with Erkenbrand, a banner, and one other guy, and most of the Grey Company still standing. Oh, and we had Dol Amroth show up turn 3, Grey Company show up turn 5, and it was on a 5' x 8' table.

Though we have done a number of large-scale things as well (a favorite has always been the Fall of Gondolin- between a friend and I we have something to the tune of 400+ elves- we always wanted to find a way to use them).

Have fun, but be sure to block quite bit of time, and write your scenarios well!

I did Fall of Gondolin SBG in my local GW, and someone stole one of my OOP metal Orc archers.

Valamir sums up the difference between WotR and SBG pretty well.

Sounds awesome, do you have written scenarios to share?

Hmm. I may indeed have some. If I don't have something on hand I can always re-create. :) It may take a little while, though, as I have a number of things on my agenda in the near future- but rest assured, since you have asked, I shall create (and tinker with, to improve).

I don't think it is wierd at all. I have been playing Wotr for 18 months and I am only just starting to play LOTR... Got to find some use for all those figures with the lack of wotr opponents!

What's weird is that WotR is still new, relatively, SBG has been out for many more years, it is strange that people can go against normal time space movement (slight exageration).
