If noone wants to play against the balrog, why don't you only play 399 point games? :P

How do you beat a Balrog?
First, you rob a bank of at least a million dollars. Then, you pay someone you hate to take a stick to the beastie while it's sleeping.

Seriously, though, I think that artillery is your best bet. You'll have to use a Balrog's worth of points, because the things simply aren't accurate, but it's the only way I can think that's likely to make a dent.
You could try a "dream team" attack with major heroes, but that's pretty wasteful to let them be slaughtered like that.
Also, I'm pretty sure that GW would come up with some sort of errata to block the Fire Breath kill from the Balrog, if that sort of duel was actually likely. I've never much cared for Fire Breath, myself, because you only get 3 uses of it, and it doesn't actually guarantee a kill.

Actually it has - its missing fate makes it vulnerable for siege engines that autokill when wounded.

No he loses the half of his wounds.
It's in the rules.

I actually never heard of that. Where did you read it?

In the artillery section in the rule-book.

Why fight the balrog?

You can win every scenario without having to even fight it. Even "to the death" is played to 25% of the force.

They are good but the best choice and 1000% effective is one:

CHUCK NORRIS

Surprised no one mentioned the knight of umbar he gets the balrogs fight strength and attacks. Heroic or strike should help him win (or is balrog fight 10?). He will die easy though so make sure you back him up.but he is much cheaper than the other options and can take a good few wounds of easy.

Rúmil+Gil-Galad+whatever else. I used a couple weeks ago, Rúmil won the fight and Gil-Galad managed to wound 1-2 a turn. It's just a tedious process.
