Are these required for olaying WOTR?
I've never played the game but I am gonna start and need to know whether i need movement trays or not...
Are they required or optional?
If optional what's the advantages/disadvantages of them?

Trays are required for WotR. SBG is a skirmish game, where each model moves and acts independently. WotR is a formation game where units of warriors are deployed. You don't have to buy the trays from GW of course, you can make your own, or you can invent a way to keep them all together. But the point is they move and act as a unit, not independently.

Yes, one movement tray equals one company.

And yes, that includes Captain/Heroes/etc.

In cavalry formations there are two models per company/movement tray.

One Infantry movement tray holds 8 models while a standard Cavalry tray is two models. They can be either generic warriors or warriors plus special models ( Banners, Captain, Drummer, etc.). Any Epic Heroes that join a Company replace one normal warrior and take his spot (the warrior is not "lost" and if the Hero jumps to another Formation you put that Hero back).

There are a host of other rules of course and many Legendary Formations have unique bases that need to be accounted for.

The GW trays are nice and what I mostly use, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with using cardboard cut to the legal size. If you just want to do it to try things out then use blue/yellow tac and stick your minis down on it. If you want to make something permanent you can still do it on homemade bases and some of those could look much better than the GW ones. I go with GW just because time is a very rare commodity for me and it's so much faster to just decorate pre-built bases so I can put hobby time to painting and playing.

In fact there are a lot of photo´s on the GW site, white dwarfs, wotr rulebook where they use cardboard instead of the WotR trays.

I would recommend Eorltheyoung. I got a lot of trays both Cavalry and Infantry from him. They were home-made but they look GREAT. Go to his trade post if you want he ships well and good prices.(No money of course. :-D )
