Is it just me or do the five lores (it is interesting in the first place that they set the number at five...) of magic in WotR closely resemble the five colors in Magic the Gathering?

Darkness = Black
Ruin = Red
Wilderness = Green
Command = White
Dismay = Blue

The effects, types of spells, and even descriptions eerily mirror those of the card game. :roll: The only one that strikes me as slightly off is Dismay which has a noticeable leaning towards Black magic but, even then, most of the Dismay spells are about messing with people's minds which is very much a trait of Blue magic.

Any comments?

I haven't played M:tG, so I can't comment on the magic lores/colors theory, but would anyone be surprised that GW would borrow something from another setting/gaming system? Have you looked at the Warhammer ranges? :?

I guess I should not be too surprised although I am not sure what you are specifically referencing in the Warhammer range. Of course, I have not kept up on WHFB since I quit. :roll:

Seriously though, no one else finds these similarities interesting?

Not really, magic is often catagorised in gaming systems, its nothing new and not really copied.

I had no one specific instance in mind. 90% of the Warhammer universe is inspired by other sci-fi/fantasy genres, and/or historical events/cultures.

Yes, magic is categorized in gaming systems but that is not what interests me. :no: It is the fact it is categorized in almost the exact same way as Magic the Gathering.

Most themes in modern literature and entertainment are inspired by previous works. That is a given. My point is magic in WotR pretty much mimics magic in Magic the Gathering. They just changed the names but the flavor, the types of spells... pretty much everything is the same. That goes beyond simple "inspiration". :roll:

Meh, if I am the only one that raises my eyebrow at this then more power to all of you. At least you will not be thinking back to tapping mountains for mana every time you cast Bolt of Fire. :(
