So the lack of a DOS starter (showing a divergence from the original trilogy) has sparked discussion about the potential of another starter kit for our beloved game. Depending on how you look at it we are either on ruleset 3 or 5 (if you count TTT and ROTK) . So what does everyone think will happen in relation to core-rules? |

I think after the latest movies are finished that they will combine the Lord of the Rings/Hobbit Ranges. |

Personally I believe AUJ is the final core update |

Maybe the fact that originally there were only two films means there will be two starters? |

I imagine it depends on how well the Hobbit range has sold/is selling. My feeling is that they will probably not invest the effort in a new rules update unless sales go especially well. |

Perhaps the 3rd film will give us a starter set with Dol Guldur Orcs vs Iron Hill Dwarves. I doubt we'll get an updated Core Rulebook. There just doesn't seem to be the same buzz and excitement for the Hobbit as there was for LOTR. GW certainly isn't promoting and supporting the game with White Dwarf coverage like it did for the LOTR and beyond. All we get now is a wave of releases to coincide with each film and a few pretty pictures, then the rest is stuffed with Warhammer releases. If we're lucky we get a trickle of LOTR releases halfway through the year. Anyone know the last time White Dwarf had a LOTR battle report? |

Probably. Last time around there was the BGiME which got people into the hobby who may not ever have set foot in GW before. There was a huge buzz about people who already did collect warhammer that finally there was a true LOTR game imminent, and when the pictures of the models appeared no one expected them to be so "realistic" (in terms of what went before). I'd say that accounted for a lot of existing gamers dabbling in LOTR. I think there were also TV commercials promoting the game, there certainly were for BGiME. The prices now are simply beyond anyone who might buy casually, you aren't going to bother unless you are already committed. As many have said before there isn't the same emphasis on the DIY aspect of the hobby that there used to be. I also think the films haven't captured the public's interest or imagination like LOTR did. |

Well put Gene I think we will get one more source book for the last film and that's it. It's a brilliant rule system, really refined over the years, and with the latest monster updates don't really see how they can change it much. Look at Warhammer, since version 5,now on 8 I think it plays no where near as good as it did. Imo. |

I did not select any of the options above. My belief is that there will be a supplement covering what appears in film 3, then sometime later we may get one more supplement filling in gaps from films 1-3 (in the way RotK releases were staged - the code set, core book, then Siege of Gondor and so on). |

The game is clearly dying on its [word deleted] in retail terms. It has been under supported by G.W. who go for months without featuring it in an article, and now we have low end troops at £5 a pop, which is for me the final nail in the coffin! Unless we see a substantial increase in interest and sales (which I believe should be possible after the release of a great film) we will not see any thing meaningful released. I suspect that the exorbitant prices will simply kill any interest generated by the new film dead as the average school kid looking to get into the hobby, or anyone else in their right mind will simply not be able to afford, or stomach the prices of the miniatures. A few years ago you could by a starter army boxed set for £60, the same money will now by you 12 Warriors of Lake town without a commander to lead them! I do not see a new book being released unless the Silmarillion is released on film! |

My wishful thinking tells me we will get one 'final' update. A almost 'polished end product' if you like, GW saying, after X years, here is our legacy. My brain says that's total Delvan Mud. |

My assumption is they will just release another book like the Desolation of Smaug for the BOFA. My hope is a new all encompassing system once all the movies and releases are done with with new rules for some characters and everything. |

My hope is a new all encompassing system once all the movies and releases are done with with new rules for some characters and everything. I suspect that there is ZERO chance of that due to the lack of interest at G.W. H.Q. |

I think the reason why they haven't made a new starter set is because the main core rules don't need updating. In the FOTR/TTT/ROTK starter sets, the game was in its infancy and had huge updates. I mean before TTT, there wasn't even any cavalry! |

Is it possible that they may have put plans for a second starter set on hold due to poor sales of the original set? Aren't there Limited Ed. EFGT sets still on sale? |

Post subject: | Re: Have we seen the final GW update to the SBG? |
It's definitely possible. no-one knows for sure (and no-one will likely ever know) but yes, there are still vast numbers of the Limited Edition EFGT box sets left which clearly shows the range sold vastly less than GW had planned for. As for a planned second starter set, I've always thought it strange that Legolas and Tauriel are the only plastic Heroes for the range. The only other hero that shares their design (multipart plastic hero on sprue with scenic base) is Radagast, the limited edition model from the first start set... My bet was that they were originally intended to be in a starter set with some Hunter orcs and that plastic Laketown scenery that never materialised. If so, it's a damn shame that it never happened. Fingers crossed that GW have noticed what has seemed (admittedly anecdotally) to be an increase in SBG interest this year and we get a nice shiny starter box this Decmeber to go under the tree |

True story. I was thinking, pretty much what you said.... Legolas, Tauriel, and Laketown Guard which became finecast when they werent selling the first set against some Hunters in the midst of laketown. I wish GW would just go balls to the wall with a starter set....like to deliver the epicness of this battle. Bard, Dain, Azog, azogs bodyguard/gundabad goblins, men of laketown, and Iron Hills dwarves all in a giant set. In this set the new Thorins company as well in 5 armies battle rattle. One set to rule them all. Lol....neeeeeeever gonna happen. |
