Hello everyone! Welcome to the thread for the April Painting Challenge! Rules 1. A miniature is decided upon before each monthly painting challenge, this months' being Gothmog. It is not required that you paint this mini, however it is preferred. Here is a list of miniatures you can paint for this months' painting challenge, in order of preference: * Any Gothmog * Any Morranon Orc Captain * Any Mordor Orc Captain 2. To enter the painting challenge, the miniature you are painting must not be painted before starting and picture proof must be shown of the miniature 'pre-painted' (unprimed, undercoated or if you are repainting and old miniature - in its' original paint scheme). 3. You may join the painting challenge in progress at any time, but must submit photographs of the completed miniature by midnight GMT of April 30th, 2011. WIP images are welcomed and encouraged. 4. Miniatures that are completed in time will be eligible to win the challenge. The challenge winner will be decided by the vote of the OR community. The community will choose one winner and one runner-up from the completed miniatures. Votes should be cast not simply on painting skill, but on merit, including creativity, application of painting techniques, artist improvement, etc. In previous painting challenges, the winner and runner-up recieved prizes in the form of gold coins, however with the websites current situation, gold coins are not available to give as prizes, so no prize is available at the moment. 5. Winners from the previous month are able to participate in the next months painting challenge, but they are not eligible to win in consecutive months. Good luck to everyone! |

I've finally got round to entering one of these things! Here's my original. It was part of a large ebay lot and didn't have a sword. As I have already got a Gothmog I have decided to convert him a bit into extra crew for a siege bow. (Sorry the image is huge - I've resized it several times on photobucket and it hasn't worked - it did for the next one though!) Here he is after a head swap and a little bit of green stuff around his neck and to replace his weird shoulder. The head is Gorbag's head and the spear/siege arrow is the top of an uruk hai pike. If you want to see what I did with the rest of Gorbag's body check my WIP thread. |

Flu made me blow the deadline on the last contest but I'm definitely down for this one. Here's a very pre-painted 'mog (and pre-superglued, and pre-greenstuffed) fresh from the shelf he's been languishing on since I bought him: I'll be finishing off a lightbox today so hopefully I'll be able to document his progress properly. |

Here's my fuzzy gothmog proof pic. I was in a hurry to take it and I just took it on my phone. Other pics will be better. |

Does anyone know how to get good pics with a 4MP camera? Mine's only been giving me $h!+. Is it simply not good enough because I can't really afford a new camera atm. |

My camera's a 5mp and it takes awesome pics, when I can be bothered to try and take a proper one! You've just got to get the focus right, hard to do on tiny models, it looks like the focus in your picture is on the lamp behind it. |

I guess I probably won't be able to get very close up shots but I'll try it out. |

As said before, use the macro function (which pretty much every camera has) and it will improve the quality of pictures at close range. The macro button/function will be shown with the image of a flower if that helps. 4MP is fine fore taking pictures of miniatures, you just need to get it right. Practising different techniques should do the trick. |

Here's my proof picture. I'm trying a new technique here for the preparation. Gothmog is primed grey and washed with Badab Black so that I would better see the details before starting painting him. I haven't even finished Théoden yet because I was painting the walls of our apartment last moth. That's now finished, so I can return to the smaller paint jobs. -- Pasi |

If it has setting, macro is the one with a flower on it, you may be able to select it in some other way, but the flower sign is the one use for macro function. |

If your camera can take a picture that close up try putting the light source above or in front of your miniature. Try not to get the light source in the picture, the camera will almost always focus on the brightest object in its view. If you have no macro option or are unable to take a picture up really close may i suggest the following; try taking the picture from about arms length or less. It doesn't matter what else you can see in the picture just makes sure the mini is well lit, against a plain background and most importantly in focus. Take a few pics from different distances just to be safe. Once you have the pictures on the computer, view/open them using the windows picture viewer. Zoom in until you can see the miniature properly and when your happy with what you see, simply press the ' PrtSc ' button which copies what you see on the screen. Open MS Paint. go into EDIT and press PASTE. All you have to do now is remove the bits you don't want and you should have a better picture of your mini Its a handy way of zooming in on images when you cant do it with the camera, I've being doing it that way for a while, does the job grand hope it helps. |
