^Well that's not a good sign considering Aragorn is a man-sized model and this month demands you paint something large! Better get started early!

Ok, I've decided to throw my hat in the ring again and will be painting Shelob (providing I can work out where each of the legs goes). Here is my proof picture:

I've made a start on my Gwaihir, assembling, filling and undercoating the eagle and building a scenic base for it. Not sure how I will mount the eagle on the top of this, but I'll worry about that at the end of the process.

This will be the greatest September-month ever!
Hoping that all thes emonsters will get finished by the end of the month! :D

@ Elland, the pose of the spiderqueen on that base looks fantastic already! Fits the figure so good!

@ Alan, I would recommend you to keep that splendid base in your freezer until the end of the month... the snow might melt meanwhile!
Never seen such a realistic snow-base before!! The tiny snow-dots in different concentrations all around make it look extremely natural!

I concur!! Wow!
I have a resin Ebob rocky base that I planned on doing the same thing with, but I am going to have a hell of a time producing a base like the masterpiece you've just created!! Awesome! 8)

Thanks everyone. It's amazing what you can do with bark chips and polyfilla. After I made it yesterday, I was really pleased with it and thought maybe I should make a few more in different sizes and cast them in resin.

You'd make a killing if you did that! Count me in for a couple if you do. :)

Great start, Alan, looking very Misty Mountainish!

Here is my proof picture:

I'm kind of worried whether I can make any sense of that big pile of legs.

Well looks like having a Balrog in dormant stage won't be good enough. Here's my progress so far.
Image
The flash on my new camera made the colours much brighter than expected, a bit conscerning, he's more brooding in natural light. I see I'm going to fall way behind in the base category. Dagorlad & Elland both have some amazing and creative bases.

Thanks for the comments guys but now I'm hitting a bit of a snag. I realised once I've completed the whole fire bit I'm going to have to decide on what to do about the skin. And it's either going to be just black with shades of gray for highlights, which is kind of dull to me, or I try to emulate some realism again with light from his own fire reflecting off his skin. Problem is that the latter would be new territory for me because I never have done fire light reflections on a model before. So I'm afraid I'll mess up and the combonation of yellow, orange, red will leave the skin looking ugly, imbalanced highlighting or an overall fire creature look. Btw the film isn't really helping this time around with the surrounding smoke and all.
