You should probably get a good hero to lead your force

such as Eomer , Theoden, Theodred, Eorl the Young are some of the best leaders

I would also pick up some more royal guard

My favorite Rohan heroes are Eomer for his epic rage rule, and Theoden for his Epic Charge. To begin with, I would get one or the other.

I would then expand your force with boxes of regular warriors or cavalry.

A single company of royal guard on foot is not that useful. However, you will have to decide if you want to spend the money to buy more companies. Playtest with them and see if you like their play style. Royal Knights are very good because they have lances, but the models are costly. You could convert some of your regular cavalry to count as knights.

The archers could do with being expanded or removed for other models and the royal guard will be a waste of points and murdered in a round of shooting. You'll need to either expand them or remove them to spend points elsewhere.

Doing a quick total in my head, that army is also only about 500 points, not 1,000 ;)

So, you'll want about double that and you'll need a Legendary Formation OR an Epic Hero to lead them.

I would say get Erkenbrand as he is decent, cheap and a great guy for duelling ;)
