Hi guys,

I'm looking at trying to get our article library back online - some of you may remember the painting, sculpting and terrain making guides we used to host.

Fixing them isn't a trivial task and it might mean the site is unavailable for a while. I plan on working on this over the next couple of weekends, so expect the site to be a little flaky at times.

Hang in there.

Alan

That would be fantastic if you could recover the Tomes ! There was just so much amazing guides and tutorials there among other things.

Good luck, and I'm sure that I speak for many when I say thanks for your efforts in trying to recover the Tomes !!

This is great news! Thanks for working on it.

Do you still have all articles, by the way? I seem to remember I have contributed a few articles, and I can send them again if needed.

It's great to see the enthusiasm for the return of the Tomes.

I have a back-up of the articles, but some of the later ones might not be there - I can't recall exactly when the site was was hacked and we had to rebuild everything. My backup is quite old, but I will bring back as many articles as I possibly can.

I'll keep you all posted on my progress.

Good luck getting it back up! I know they helped me a ton when I was getting started, or even when I was just looking for some motivation.

Any news? This was always the thing I liked the most. Guidance for painting my troops and inspiration for terrain. :)

Has there been any progress on this? If fixing the tomes section is impossible, could the articles be uploaded to an open Dropbox folder? We could then have a sticky thread with a hyperlink to the folder.

This is a good idea in theory, but I believe that the main problem is that the articles were only stored online, and many of the authors are now inactive, and i know that at least one of the main writers has now sadly passed away. A good idea, maybe something for the future, or more likely, something that could be set up alongside the GBHL facebook page maybe?

Thanks,

Tom

Hey there. Yes, unfortunately this is still an issue. I remember Dags popping up on the Great British Hobbit League Facebook group a couple of years ago saying he was trying to fix it. As I deleted my Facebook account I no longer have access to the group, so I don't know if there's any news about it, but I can only assume the attempt failed.

I was quite passionate about trying to get it back a few years ago, but I've come around to accept that it's never going to happen. Alan is understandably busy and has a life outside of this forum, and many members of the current SBG community have probably never used this site, so it has been left behind.

It's a shame, I love it here. I love how it's anonymous, pure hobby, and nothing to do with Facebook. I love how it looks, I love the smilies, I love the flairs etc. I love how it doesn't advertise to me or try and hook me with notifications. It's enormously nostalgic for me, as I created my account here in 2013, and lurked here for three years prior to that. All good things come to an end, and this forum was unmistakably a very good thing.

Hi Alan

Go for it! There were some really amazing guides and tutorials way back when and it would be great to see their return.

If it's possible it would also be good for the membership to be able to add new articles to the 'ToW". Especially given how much the technology to create and things has changed in the past decade.

Thank you so much for what you do to keep this site alive.

Kalatha (Paul)
