Hi, It's my brother's birthday in a couple of weeks. He has a new house and now plenty of space to build the laketown/snow board he's been dreaming about. As far as I'm aware he hasn't actually bought anything to build he bird yet though. Can anybody reccmmend any nice accessories or prices of scenery that could work well for his board? I'm wondering if there are houses that would scale well with GW laketown house? Or iced rivers? Or snowy ruins that are particularly cool? I intend to get some snow flock but I didn't want to just get that and a pile of foam board so a couple of nice pieces would be good. He plays Apace Wolves as well as armies from the North of Middle Earth. Thanks |

I had thought about a Laketown board many times. I has thinking of taking the deep cut studios dark water mat ... http://www.deepcutstudio.com/product/wa ... darkwater/ and buying a couple of sheets of 3mm opaque polycarbonate/perspex and cut these up into chunks of floating ice, adding a few patches of snow on top. |

I live in the Great White North, so I'll throw my 2 cents in. Noch, a model (train) company out of Germany is highlighting their snow products for wargamers on their website, Ziterdes, which is designed for wargaming. Ziterdes also has some great extruded foam pieces. While I find them a bit pricey, they paint up nice and are quite durable and very light, so shipping is cheaper that way! Ziterdes has a line up of lake town houses and pieces you can use to modify them. Note that they won't be detailed on the inside. They also have bridges and boats and other fun things. In N. America, Woodland Scenics is our go-to for terrain, as they've pretty much monopolized the market. Their products are affordable, available and easy to work with. Even if you choose not to use their product, they have a great video on how to make a snow scene. If you want to try their product, they make a snow scene kit for school projects that has samples and instructions. Lots of guys use liquid water paste to make ice and icicles. I can explain how to do it, but you'd be better off to look on youtube for model train videos. If you absolutely don't want to spend any money, you can use baking powder and white school glue. Just make a past and smear. Some people say this yellows, but I haven't had a problem with it. As for water, most people mix 2 part resin and pour or use some kind of resin counter top finish. You can see an example of poured resin in DMS's mindblowing diorama. I've also seen waves made from caulking. Just squeeze and use a finger to blend. (Wear disposable gloves, though. Safety first!) Alternatively, I've seen the plastic covers of florescent tube lights spray painted and drybrushed lightly for water. I think it looks pretty good and unlike resin, it won't flow everywhere. Good luck and whatever you decide, show pictures! |

In addition to the good explanations before me, here are some good terrain pieces (houses & docks): http://thomarillion.de/?page=artikel_detail&id=631 http://thomarillion.de/?page=artikel_detail&id=628 http://thomarillion.de/?page=artikel_detail&id=634 http://thomarillion.de/?page=artikel_detail&id=633 http://thomarillion.de/?page=artikel_detail&id=630 These are the Noch models GreatKhanArtist refers to. They seem great to get more variation! |

Wow that website is great! I hadn't even heard of it. I think I'll be getting the snow pack that they sell with a house or two. The ice paste to make the ground look like cracked ice looks particularly interesting. It does sound like baking powder will yellow from the internet and as it's a present I'm not sure that would be such a great gift anyway! Thanks guys! |

If you are ambitious, buy a box of popsicle sticks and skewers from a craft or restaurant supply store (don't take stirrers from your local coffee shop) and build your own lake town. Here is an example http://www.dchobbitleague.com/laketown.html. whatever you end up doing, take photos and share! Here is his wip on this site: viewtopic.php?f=50&t=30377 |

I am designing a laketown board and would like to make some ice floes - some large and some small. Has anyone seen any good guides or got any good techniques for this that don't involve a lot of complicated gear? |

Thanks - looks like a pretty good way to achieve the ice effect! |
