Yesterday I received my Deepcut studio grass mat 4x4 and it looks amazing! http://www.deepcutstudio.com/product/wa ... mat-grass/ Now I want to build some terrain for it. Recently I saw this video and was very inspired to make something similar. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6hhxnDHgCM Now my question is what materials would I need to build something similar? I also managed to get a Ruins of Middle Earth set which I want to implement to the bases as well. I already came across these: http://www.howardscenicsupplies.co.uk/n ... of-25-n-z/ |

For forests, I tend to build modular setpieces that blend tactical usability and visual appeal. I start with some kind of board, then glue a few model trees to it. Then, using a scenery kit (Scenerama I think) I add grass, weeds, flowers, and shrubs. This way, I can position them anywhere on the field. This makes sure that the battlefield is never the same. As for ruins, I have the Return of the King Journeybook, which has a guide for making ruins. Starting with board, then gluing on walls in shapes of castle-style parapets and other stone building sections, and then adding lots of little shapes to the ground allows for a very nice looking ruin. When painted and used, it looks like part of a crumbled sector and the walls/difficult terrain add lots of strategic potential. Also, some ruins of Osgiliath would be good. They are very modular, and I think can even be stacked to create bigger buildings. They just came back in stock too. Also, would you recommend the Deepcut Studio mat? I'm looking to grab a few different ones. And if so, in PVC, Cloth, or Mousepad? |

Thanks for your tips! What do you mean with a scenery kit? What do you use as board, some sort of MDF? And what do you use for trees, I stumbled across these: http://www.howardscenicsupplies.co.uk/n ... of-25-n-z/ Yea I totally recommend Deepcut Studio! I got myself a Grass mousepad one. The mousepad version is the most expensive (4 x 4 = 55EU) but als the most durable and they are worth every penny! |

And for board, I had to use cardboard which wasn't preferable, but I think some MDF would be better. For ruins I used thick project foam. And with Deepcut, I think I'll pick up some then! |

You can find fake trees for model trains on ebay for very cheap. |

Or you can make your trees. I use florist wire wrapped in floral tape. I haven't finished them yet, but I'm going to try spray painting them and going that route. You can buy foliage from various model train suppliers. I have oodles of Hirst Arts blocks miscasts that I use for ruins. I used to use foamcore for bases, but it warps. I now break down and buy bases from Warbases in the UK. |
