Post subject:  An elven fortress

My brother has been bugging me for ages to make a castle, he likes the advantage. Now that I have acquired a large amount of polystyrene, expanded sadly, I've decided to do just that. Since he collects wood elves I wanted it to reflect that somewhat. Ideas on how to achieve that would be greatly appreciated.
I have limited resources so take the into consideration but still be creative as even though I can't make something I can still incorporate the idea behind it. With that in mind ideas on what materials to use would also be helpful.

sounds great.

How about thandurils halls?
that could be done by making a large hill with many chambers and some elvish buildings on top and around it.
Do you have a hot wire cutter and balsawood?

looking forward to it.

Thank you aqan, that was a great idea. I don't have a hot wire cutter but I can easily cut the Styrofoam into a slope and add sand to it to make it look like the side of a mountain. Then I just need to get some balsa wood, which will be easy, and made a series of platforms and walkways so that it would work like an ordinary wall. Once that is all done I could go on to make the interior. I won't be able to get started for another week as I'm serving at a youth retreat this weekend but after next week we will have a two week break so there will be plenty of time to work on it.
Feel free to leave more suggestions and comments.

When i think about the elves, i think about a scene were they met the elves in the forest. If i remember well , it was like it was like some kind of nature room. Trees as pillars and stuff like that. Tree stumps to sit on?; But i guess this might be a bad idea... But who knows in combination with other stuff. You could also built tree houses?

Here's mine, although its more Rivendell than Wood elf:

Lothlorien was surrounded by a white wall and Mirkwood buried into a mountain, Mirkwood might be your best bet with a mountain side with maybe a few walls between spurs or something.

Nice wall! :-D

If you REALLY want a challenge try rivendell! It looks very hard to make sturdy but delicate elf building (those stupid 10year olds at the store )

Well done, Hithero!

I think Aqan's suggestion of Thranduil's Hall is probably the best way to go here. It will be easiest, and will leave openings if your brother wants to field a different army, such as dwarves (now there's irony).
I think you should invest in a hot wire cutter, though. Styrofoam dulls hobby knives with amazing speed, & the wire cutter will get through your work a lot faster.
A trick I use, if you're interested, is to take one of my wood burning tools and put an old exacto blade in it. This will give you the heat advantage coupled with the control of the hobby knife.

In any case, I'm looking forward to seeing what you do. Remember to post pics!

Thank you hithero, your picture is very inspirational. Due largely to that picture I have decided to make a far more complex structure than I had originally planned. Could you please post a picture of the inside, a shot from behind, of the fortress? That would be very helpful.

That Rivendell piece is amazing, what materials did you use for everything?

Materials: 2" packing foam, mdf base, foam-core card for walls and cardboard for the roofs and masonary paint for texture and the usual grass flocking. Fancy fence posts ar Marks and Spencer cocktail sticks and the tree is a grape vine and foilage. The bridge is from Thomorillion. The flowerbeds I made from petal stuff for making cards. The templates for the windows and entrances were made in Word by just using their pre-defined shapes and printed onto card and cut out.

All the buildings are removable so they can be used stand alone if needed.

Under construction.

Hope that helps.

Thank you Hithero. It is a lot more complicated than I thought. It is a really nice piece of terrain and very inspiring.
