does anyone have any ideas for the road? i was thinking perhaps 5mm foamboard, sanded down at the edges and then the stone grooves cut into it with a hobby knife?

You should try textured plasticard, it should work.

Here's what I might use:

Browse the site, they have a whole range of plasticard.

Instead of painting it, get some spray-paint. You can get some cheap grey spray-paint from somewhere like Wilkinsons.

Were you going to do ruined buildings or un-ruined buildings?

Here's a nice Osgiliath board that I saw over on The Palantir website if you want some inspiration.

Very tasty, I reckon. :) I apologize for posting such a big picture in your thread but I didn't want to resize it as you would find it harder to make out details.

Here is some more Osgiliath information from Revolutionary posted on The Palantir (he is very talented and the images/descriptions give good guidance on the sort of steps you need to take to create great Gondorian terrain).

And this from Ninjameister on HDR:

Check out framecaplib for screengrabs from RotK for more inspiration.

Nice links Chris. I would make some myself, but that would mean I would have to start painting my Gondor army to play on it so I'll leave it for now. :o
