Post subject: | Orthanc Project Help |
hey everyone recently ive been growing tired of painting and so i thought i would go back to what got me into the hobby . . . terrain building and so i thought i would start BIGGG project. i have in mind orthanc and its big round pavement thing. straight away i realised some problems . . . orthanc is what? a mile high? so for starters i need to find way to make this work . . . i decide on only building up to the part were you see sauruman standing in the two towers. that was one problem solved. but a couple of others occured . . . HOW WOULD I MAKE IT AND WHAT WOULD I USE!!! also size? how would i know what to scale it down too? for instance what is the scale in miniature terms? . . . how big is the circle pavement? does anyone have ansews to these questions, i need as much help as possible. Thanks for reading FoF |

I dont know if this is any help.. But according to Wikipedia Orthanc is 500 feet/150 meters high. and if i remember right, the only way to get to the top of the tower is to walk up the very small stairs! |

the ring has a diameter of exactly 1 mile so it'll be alittle big for miniatures even to scale. the scale is 1/58 so your ring would be around 95 feet in diameter. may i suggest not going realistic scale. |

thanks everyone PAMOLEMOUSE: thats excactly what i needed to know. i will stick to scale but will only do the 4 paths leading outwards instead of the ring. The King Of Mirkwood: thanks . . . so if its is 150m and the average height for a man like aragorn is what? 2 meters? that would be 75 aragorns stacked up on top of each other so if i use the miniature size of araagorn or saruman . . . i could roughly judge that from the floor to just above the part where sauruman stands is around 40m? so thats 20 of sauruman on top of each other. does this make any sense? does it sound roughly right? |

I should guess that Aragorn is about 190-200 centimeters! (1,9-2meters) So you are right! |

FoF I'm not very godd at buliding terrain and so on but... Maybe start with big sized plywood or something like that! and I shuold but Saruman and grima, s they can stand on the balcony, that makes it more realistic! Are you going to buid it "ruined like it is in the end of Fellowship of the ring" or like it was before? |

proably like it was before so you can play when saruman was good . .. and when he was bad and the ents attacked. i like the idea of the council of the wise against loads of enemys on the board . . . would be so fun to play. only problem with wood is there is nowhere near me to get it . . . is there any online uk sites? |

there are suposed to be extensive tunnles going far abroad, the unfinnished tales talkes briefly about this. |

Post subject: | |
Yeah, in the book Gandalf talks about Sarumans escape! and I'm pretty sure he mentions tunnels, because Saruman most take his run to The Shire as Sharkey. And take his revenge on the poor hobbits |

This certainly sounds an interesting project. I did once see a wonderful Orthanc built that was about 5 feet tall, but try as I may I cannot find it to post a link. On the plus side I did find this whichmay help with some scale, from an optiical point of view. Best wishes http://www.stumbleupon.com/su/17dRA4/ww ... ilder.org/ |
