To me 'small' is something roughly 8" by 6", no bigger. But that is thinking in terms of modular terrain, I've never made a board, which I would consider a large project.

A board takes up a lot of space. I am not sure it would have to be a large project in terms of time, money or expertise.The same with a large hill or back drop. It would depend on the detail.
You have raised a good point


Some examples of some small projects I am working through. The bridge is small but boarder line. I put it together from left over parts from at least 3 different molds and at least 4 casting sessions.I did not intend to include it.

to be honest i have seen a lot of articles on terrain building but a lot seem really big, i would really be interested in ones more about really small budget and explaining a few techniques.
by the way can you tell me what that yellowey orange square of material is please. it seems useful for making a roof

I would love to see terrain guides for building under $20 or so. In particular, I would love to see a forest!

I usually buy foam board and random things here and there.
I try to make terrain for free such as finding twigs for trees, digging for dirt in the garden, and things like that.

Also, I'm finding that coffee sediment from the espresso machine, once completely dry, makes good scatter material or as a substitute for sand. I used it on a ruin that took me about an hour to make with styrene, plaster of paris and a piece of MDF as the base.

As you undertake more and more terrain projects, you tend to accumulate a number of basic supplies - flock, sand, balsa wood and other essentials - that will last you for many years. But the initial $$$ outlay always bites deep - should I buy a tub of flock or put that money towards another blister pack of figures? The same with tools - building up a decent toolkit costs a lot of money that could be spent on more immediate gaming needs, but they will last you for many many years.

To write a hobby article about building a basic terrain piece on a small budget, you have to make some assumptions about what hobbyists already have in their toolbox otherwise the budget is blown immediately - a hobby knife, cutting board and steel ruler will cost you more than $20.

That is very true. I have noticed that many of the people who have responded have many of the more common tools.You have already done a tool article. I do not feel I need to do another. My idea was to suggest a project that everyone would build. Then over a period of time we could make how to tips or even tutorials.I think the challenge may be to stick to budget.

ok what assumptions do you have about what people have in that toolbox then.

i have a cutting mat, steel rule, files, hobby knife and scissors.

not sure how important it is but i thought it might be worth mentioning
