Hi, been in and out of the hobby over the years but have never gotten so far as building a board to play with the miniatures on.

I shamelessly copied a design i saw on PP forums that I somehow managed to stumble on by pure ah luck as it turns out because it's my motivation now.

Its 1200x1200 and the next step is cutting out all the flag stone pieces and gluing them on. Massive job that I am dreading.

Plan is to add some buildings around the paths and main square but have given to much thought to it yet. Will see what happens.

That was a very interesting Link. The wooden tiles will be expensive to buy.
I would suggest bath room/back splash tiles and grout.

Thats something I hadn't considered Oldman Willow. I'm not using balsa as in the link though which would be expensive.

I am using 3 types of cardboard and 4 different shapes giving 12 different tiles to vary the thickness and give it a more random look and its free...

Try to find some old fashioned egg cartons they have a cool rock like texture.

That doesn't sound like a silly idea!! I've been using standard flat card and was wondering how I was going to get a decent texture.

As I have already started gluing it down any ideas for texturing it? I will do a test paint on a section of it to see whats like currently. Will update with a photo when I have done so.

You will need to take care with card. A lot of things will cause the card to warp. You can use a sponge and paint.



The craft paint will be thick enough if you do not thin it. I like natural sponges but the artificial sponge from the kid's brush kit works fine. You can do the same with dry wall filler.

Textured fresco wallpaper or kitchen/bathroom paper often has a brick effect. Smaller than mosaic tiles, and easier to cut to shape. You can also get a sample for free, possibly enough to cover the board.
