Hi everyone. I finished a 4x4 skirmish board at the end of October. I admittedly rushed it; I finished in 7 weeks. I need it for the Warstore weekend; a gaming event here in the NYC area. It was for an Infinity event (don't kill me guys), but I built a contoured board with flat areas to place either sci-fi or LOTR buildings. I live in an apartment so my terrain needs to do double duty. So here's the board. Please excuse the building and jet.



Please ask all the questions you want. Since I finished it months ago I'm having trouble organizing this into a WIP thread.

what did you make the rocks of because they look really realistic.
and just like kidterminal said a littlemore details like a ruin or some bushes would really finish it.

That looks absoloutely awesome, very close attention to the rock formations and it shows! As a demo table, it is perfect as well as it will really draw people's attention, being that shape.

Great work on the rocks, very realistic and nice touch with pebbles at base of the cliffs. I think that is a good compromise because you can add thematic buildings and trees later and as you say you can't have lots of different boards because of space at home. I like the shape too. One suggestion: paint the white edges of the boards brown to stop them showing through?

Yes good point. Believe it or not this board was rushed and little things like that didn't get done. I got a little burnt out so I haven't touched or photographed it since.


The board is made up of 4 2x2 1" foam tiles. I cut the tiles years ago to build a Rohan board in '09. I tore that apart and used the tiles as the base for the new board. I never finished it and it wasn't that good.
Hear are some construction photos to show you how it was made.

I built the mountains up using foam. Then I covered them with cast rocks.


Then I used wood filler to to fill in the cracks so the cliffs wouldn't have a jigsaw look.

By the way I've been trying to trade for a few metal figures. If someone wants I can cast up a cliff face or to in trade.

I actually prefer it without the flock. I like this desolate desert look.

Here are the cast plaster rocks I used to create the cliff faces.

Love the use of the cast rocks. I was looking to pick up a set of rock molds from local train shop but was thinking more for accent purposes. I didn't consider how nice it could look if you get a variety and use them as a larger aspect like that.

Your paint job is great (agree on getting the edges cleaned up of course). I think with a less traditional flock color it would look even better. Your own work is great...the flock just doesn't look real enough to justify everything else you did.

The layout itself is wonderful for small games and a neutral board is best. You can add trees, buildings, etc. during scenario setup.

Do your boards hook together at all? I'm really wanting to start on a set of 2x2 boards that can be arranged in different patterns for variety purposes but am concerned about separation during play. I was thinking about a peg/hole option in the MDF base but then have to be very exact in drilling those. Not that measuring is complex, but I do like to simplify when possible.

Thank you. I used 5 different Woodland Scenics molds to make the board. Also when you cast the molds there are ways to change the shape of the cast so you can get several different shapes out of one mold. I thought about using rare earth magnets to hold them together myself. But I ran out of time and I didn't use any method to hold the boards together. Interestingly enough the boards never moved during play.
