I also build scale military models - i.e. tanks, soldiers, dioramas of the above - and one very effective technique is to cut bricks out individually from cork, glue them to your wall, and then apply plaster on top and wipe it off as though grouting tiles. Its tedious, but it looks great. 8)

perhaps im a noob, but for my helmsdeep i build walls of a kind of styrofoam or insulation foam, however u call it. with a very good knife i draw the bricks. see galleries for result...

then the painting, done with kind of cheap acryllic waterbased paint, 3$ for 200ml
