The current (as of this writing, #436) Miniature Wargames magazine has some Tolkien content, namely a couple of First Age scenarios from the Battle of Unnumbered Tears.

The scenarios aren't designed for SBG, but they are presented generically and adapting them shouldn't be too difficult.

If you're interested in Tolkienian wargaming then it's worth a look.

Wish I could find this magazine (as well as Wargames Illustrated) in a store. The one hobby store that use to carry them is now closed.

Are the scenarios generic or do you get a Tolkien feel from them?

I ordered mine direct from Tabletop Gaming here:

https://www.tabletopgaming.co.uk/miniature-games/store/back-issues/miniature-wargames/miniature-wargames-august-2019-issue-436

I think the scenarios are trying to be faithful to the battles. But battles are battles, so they are not far off generic Middle Ages combat with some special rules for the circumstances. There's no magic, but you'll need trolls for one of the two scenarios.

They hardly seem like must-haves, but they don't look like toss-offs either.

I have a lot of interest in historical gaming, too, though, so it seemed worth picking up the magazine anyway.

That was interesting, thanks for posting. I would have liked a little more narrative, but the pictures were pretty great.
