Well the new age is nearly upon us for Warhammer players.

Who'd thought Lotr SBG game system would ever outlast Warhammer Fantasy. Looks like it's definite confirmation that the end times have arrived to the blocks of unit formations wargame. :D  :-D :(

As far as we know, from several reliable sources, none of the model lines are being discontinued or replaced, and all existing models will get FREE rules for this new system.

I'll definitely be grabbing the starter set, some really beautiful minis to paint in there (especially as I'm on something of a High Fantasy kick at the moment between WFB and D&D), but I'll need to see more of the rules before I go further. 4 pages for a whole ruleset isn't inherently a problem so long as the unit cards add some depth back in, but I'm still far from convinced that Age of Sigmar will be as good a game as LotR, Kings of War or the upcoming Dragon Rampant (Fantasy spin-off of the brilliant Lion Rampant historical rules).

Yeah more details or rumours are trickling in as we get closer to the date. But the old armies/models will probably get replaced in two years time or more as they release newer models to make the old ones obsolete.

Let's hope AOS is not going to replace any games and instead becomes one of those specialist games like gw use to have.

^That's wishful thinking. AoS is replacing WHFB. Fantasy is the one that will enter the specialty list unless there's such a major backlash towards GW for changing the game system. My understanding is that it's pricey to build up a blocked army, where a skirmish game requires less. That's why Lotr Wotr reverted back to SBG.

But I don't understand some people behaving like Fantasy is dead forever when the game becomes no longer supported by GW. You have an army you dedicated towards, others around must have an army they dedicated towards, find a group and match up for a game. People acting like, "I'm selling my armies", great! Someone else will buy and continue playing. My FB groups are like "We'll pass on AoS, and stick to 8th".

People say it's dead because the only people who are ever online are the people who play tournaments.

Having just witnessed what GW did to WHFB, I somewhat hope they keep their paws off SBG - it's better to be unsupported, than turned into.. that.

I know that this is a german page, but the photos are taken from an english white dwarf: http://waaaghgaming.de/

I do not know how GW wants to make money with this game. Most warhammer players do already have hundreds of miniatures and now you don´t need a lot. I can (probably) download the new rules for free at GW, so I don´t know what I should buy.
I do like the basic idea behind age of sigmar: You have easy to learn rules and low starting costs. The books do focus on the background. However, the Hobbit has also easy to learn rules and (on of) the best background(s).
I think that GW wants to get a lot of new players into the game and after a short periode of time, they will release the 9th edition.

While I can't really comment on GW's current ranges other than LOTR/Hobbit, these look very 40k to me.

When I play Warhammer Fantasy I usually play third edition. The third edition is compatible with the old siege rules and the role playing game.Third is the Rogue Trader addition.Games workshop has a long history of producing products that they know full well will not be compatible with the next product they plan to produce.
Space Hulk was supposed to be an expansion for Rogue Trader. Then Space Crusade and Tyranid attack were not playable together much less with Space hulk. GW dropped armies and whole races from one edition to the next. They have produced whole new additions without finishing the Army books. I have no reason to believe this is not more of the same. I am out. I am not a fan of plastic. I will not purchase Fine Cast. The point is GW does not produce any thing I am willing to buy.

I play Lion Rampant as often as twice a week. Sometimes I can get in two games on Sunday. The Fantasy game/Dragon Rampant is on my list to buy.
I have started rebasing much of my collection for Lion Rampant even though it is not necessary.

I have a large collection of LOTR figures much of it is from GW. I am not going to limit myself to GW rules.

One of many not GW rules sets the club uses.

just read the pdf file of the empire and dwarves, im definitly stickiing with 8th. gotrek and felix are my hard hitting game winners, and thier rules in AOS are PATHETIC. Gotrek is a dragon slayer and felix is a millitia leader in the profiles. no special rules at all.

I won´t play Age of Sigmar, too. Now, it is a skirmisher with simple rules in a fantasy universe. The Hobbit is also a skirmisher with simple rules in a fantasy universe, but the rules and the story are much better. You cannot make a good and special game with just 4 pages. I had to smile when I read this sentence in the new rule"book": In a game as detailed and wide-ranging as Warhammer: Age of Sigmar ...

The miniatures look alright. Maybe it might be too over-the-top for some, but they look fun to paint. Never the less I can't get over the price of plastic figures.

The only good thing about the 4 page rule book is that now you can play like any board game, no long hours of reading the rules.

I'll be doing what I currently do - pick and choose the models & scenery I like, but use different rules by other companies. Eagerly anticipating Dragon Rampant, by Osprey. Currently using Open Combat for small scale skirmish.

I shall mourn the Old World, though. I loved it before I loved Middle Earth. It will live on in my bitter, grizzled heart.

I, too, am said about the Old World being gone. Half my hobby besides the actual hobby aspect when it comes to Warhammer was reading about the world in novels and such. Now that's gone and I'm just like "meh". Mantic has some cool goblins. . .maybe I'll pick some up at Gen Con. . .

Come on guys, we have SBG why would we play some half-hashed 40k looking skirmish game?

AoS is just terrible.
