Granted, he's not very good but he makes a cheap warband leader. Do you think "horde" dwarves could work?

I'm pretty sure he is an independent hero...

He's an independant hero but I will be using him this weekend at the Mansfield tournament. I have got a shieldbearer in the army too so he will be re-rolling failed courage rolls - meaning at worst he will likely spend the whole game as a f4, d4 soldier, but if I get lucky he will go super mode a few times and totally kick bum.

Where does it say he is an independent hero? I can't see it

Edit: Ah I see the little icon means independent hero, that's ruined my plans somewhat!

Yeah of course he cant lead a warband but he sounds intriguing nonetheless

I like him a lot, the profile's fluffy as hell and the model's gorgeous (he's currently awaiting the brush in my painting queue, who knows when I'll get to him though…).

I've been knocking up a whole bunch of Hobbit-themed Good armies recently and due to their relatively static points costs you often end up with 10 points spare that you'd normally use to buy another warrior - he's a fun little way too use up those spare points.

The only issue is there's no explanation about what happens if he fails his courage roll on anything other than a double 1 - it's not official but in our recent community FAQ we ruled that he stands still for the turn, can't charge but will fight as normal if charged - that seemed fairest.

I think Thrain is always worth it as long as you have a Shield bearer and maybe even a hornblower because he is extremely cheap. If you have the points to spare, I say why not?
