Hi all!

Long time lurker but first time poster at last.

Over the last few weeks I have been getting more and more into the SBG again, I have been collecting and painting the models for years but only now have I truly started actually fielding troops in games.

I am all about the Dwarves and have pretty much everything that has been released with them so I can have a very varied Durin/Erebor force. :gimli:

I see a lot of people swearing by Khazâd Guard, but in the last 3 games for me they have all been cut down VERY fast. It could be bad roles on my part, but the -1 to fight has been disastrous in there attempt to do anything. I field 8 of them with either Durin or Balin, but they just aren't impressing me at the minute. Are they mean't to be split amongst other troops etc?

Any help would be appreciated guys.

Use them with iron guard or with erebor dwarf spear support (led by Dwalin if possible). You essentially need more dice in the fight.

Work toward flanking or trapping your opponent's force and the Two handed axes will deliver the punch to kill off opposition more efficiently.

Hi and welcome to the One Ring.
I can tell you the problem is you're using their 2-hand axes. Don't do that unless you are heavily outnumbering your opponent in the fight.

And just to preempt the likely question: Yes they do have regular hand axes as well as the 2-handers lol

A banner can incease the effectiveness of a kazad guard. Kings Champion flanked by kazads is cool

I agree with JameR - don't use 2 handed axes axes.

Every model in the game has a hand weapon :)

Galadriel and fatty bolger dont have hand weapons. I'd imagine Angbor does.

"used to" indeed.

As for the khazad guard: having them fight with just a hand weapon means that they are pretty decent at winning fights (F4 and hopefully a banner nearby), will survive if they lose (D7) while causing damage pretty reliably when winning (S4). Against pretty much anything, they'll kill faster than they are being killed. Able to charge monsters, ringwraiths or other scary things without problem too of course, always nice.
As for using other troops alongside them: some warriors with shield can be useful to charge multiple enemies and use the shielding rule (they'll possiblly win and probably survive regardless), then have the guard pick easier fights.

As others have said, don't use the 2handed weapons. They're point for point the best infantry in the game, so it should be rare for them to get butchered, unless you make the mistake of fighting a big monster.

Coens on the money - don't use 2H unless you outnumber them and have your other warriors shield to make the space so you can outnumber/outflank as your guys are mmore likely to survive. Dwarves will die but they are good because the enemy normally dies faster so do what you can to accentuate that point.

Aaaaaah, I had completely forgot that unless stated otherwise every unit has a single handed weapon. :/

My tactic is going to be have my King's Champion spearhead the force with my Kazad and Erebor spearman (obviously from a different warband but just move them in after deployment) in support, if I keep it nice and tight I can get the most out of my Heralds and still keep them safe.

Thank you for the speedy and helpful responses guys, I knew it was a good community on here anyway. :)

Hopefully get all my WIP pics up soon and a few battle reports.

Cheers again folks!

My personal thoughts on how to make Khazad Guard effective? Replace them with other things or use them in WotR ;)

I guess the real method is to use them alongside spear-armed warriors (a battle-line of Khazads supported by Grey Company with spears should be good).

But I find they just don't work for my style of play.

They're fun with the iron guards (I believe that's who I'm thinking the throwing/ 2 attack unit) charge and throw with them and then charge with your 2h guy if you can get both on just 1 guy/monster they're a pretty good combo esp with kc and heralds close by
