What's the difference between Rangers of the North and the Dunedain? I know the Rangers have +1 defence, but what's the difference in who they are? I thought Rangers of the north were Dunedain. |

My understanding, although not consistent with GW, is that the Dunedain are basically the ancestors of the Numenoreans. The Rangers of the North, along with several over peoples (such as the men of Dol Amroth), are specific types of Dunedain. |

Thanks, I got a bit confused. So actually Rangers of the North are more or less the same as Dunedain of the North. |

In the game I would call them the same guys but with different armour. The dúnedain in general are "men of the west", West referring to Numenor, just like General Elessar explained. The dúnedain miniatures in the game are Aragorn's kinsmen, his fellow rangers in their forest equipment when they are operating in the woods in the north. The Rangers of the North minis were published as the dúnedain who rode south to aid Aragorn. Same guys as the dunedain, but they put on their heavier armour since they were openly riding to war. I hope this made any sense... -- Pasi |

Yes the Dunedain are Numenoreans, but Tolkien wrote that the true cause of the fall of Arnor was due to the Dunedain mixing with lesser men. Aragorn's kin are pure Numenorean, but most of the men of Arnor were not. I'm not sure if GW is trying to make that distinction with the ranger of the north or not. Rob |

Yes, the Rangers of the North and the Dunedain are the same thing. Just one lot has armour and one lot does not. I will quibble with Kid Terminal's comment about the true cause of the fall of Arnor. The true cause of the Fall of Arnor was one (1) Witch King of Angmar and one (1) shedload of evil beasties fighting a five hundred year war against a kingdom which had already fragmented into three. Arthedain held on the longest, but the Great Plague wiped out the last bits of Cardolan. Rhudaur went bad early on. It did not help that many of Arnor's nobility, who would otherwise have been the forefathers of generations of warrior elite, fell with Isildur at the Gladden Fields. Arnor may have been Elendil's kingdom, but it was never the most populated. Those few dozen nobles and their warriors who died at the Gladden really had a knock on effect which hurt the kingdom later on. Like Gondor, the vast majority of the population were Dunlending-types. Unlike Gondor, it does not appear that the Arnorians embraced their distant kinsmen as allies. |

GW sells different minis for RotN and for Dunedain--both metal--and for plastic Rangers of MiddleEarth. Hard to tell them apart, except for the chainmail on RotN shoulders & skirts. For tournements, however, they might get picky... I have no experience there, just a feeling from posts. |

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D%C3%BAnedain After the fall of Arthedain, a remnant of the northern Dúnedain became the Rangers of the North, doing what they could to keep the peace in the near-empty lands of their Fathers. The surviving Dúnedain population of Arnor retreated to the Angle south of Rivendell, while smaller populations made isolated settlements in far western Eriador. |

Thanks for this, it explains a lot. So after Arthedain fell, the few Dunedain that were left became the Rangers who tried to keep the Northern Lands safe. I like the dunedain mini's more anyway. |

Do I find the profile (Dunedain) in 'The Fellowship of The Ring' journey book? When playing a scenario ('The Fellowship of The Ring), may I use models (Dunedain) with spears? |
