I get rules like that mixed up all the time - especially since he had that free Will in 3/4 editions of the game I've played (waaaay back with FotR).

Thankfully for me I only discovered SBG a few years back after the OR book was published. So that helps eliminate the issue of "old clutter", but doesn't address the problem of "one thing drives out another", as they say.

That's not quite what I meant kinda like this

N-nazgul
O-orc
W-your warrior
H-your hero

OOON...OOOOO
........WWWH
...........WW

It's quite rare that you'll get a nazgul bang in the middle of their battle line, if so, just heroic combat into them.

i usually run a wraith on a fell beast in a senario like this. that way i can fly over my troops, flank them, and fly away the next turn.works pretty well with the harbinger of evil rule too if you loose priority next turn.

Anyone with the "Drain Will" spell can be useful for getting rid of your enemy's spellcasters. Also, you could try fielding a larger number of weaker heroes, like captains. While they won't be able to hold their own against enemy trolls or powerful heroes, they are still useful for holding your army together with their might and standfasts.
