ah indeed, overlooked that
anyway I still don't like Arathorn being there, thematically it's a disaster
of course, it's completely legal

I was unaware of when Arathorn died. When I recently purchased a blister pack for the game, the two characters in it were Halbarad and Arathorn so I did not give using them together a second thought. I am not sure what the thought process would be in bundlng the models together if you could only use one or the other? Any suggestions on what character I would use to replace him or should I not bother?

So I take a little of everything, hoping to avoid the complaints that Grey Company armies shoot too much and do nothing else, so they are not fun for either side and should have limited shooting. Then I see the above criticism that the theme is not fun? I am not sure I understand as to what theme you are looking for? What makes this theme not fun? What would you consider to be a fun theme?

I am not new to gaming but I am new to this game and am trying to choose a list that will be fun and competitive for both myself and anyone I play against. It seems that one has to walk a thin line in this game to either avoid having an overpowered list and one that has no chance, while remembering which named characters may or may not have been alive at any point in th chronolgy of the mythos.

To a certain extent it appears that some players want to really limit themselves, or others, in regards to which models can appear with other models, as most of the "named" characters only interact with each other on a very limited scale.

Is it fairly standard for instance to play the game and limit Boromir's role in the games to only engagements prior to his death in the book and/or movie or do most folks use him in any Gondor List but then limit any allies to not include other characters unless they are shown to have met or at least "lived" at the same time? I ask this question as this is the first time I have heard this issue raised and if I need to drop a character as it is against some unwritten rules that is fine, as long as I know about those rules.

Aragorn was 2 when his father died and if I'm not mistaken, Halbarad is roughly the same age, so he might have been alive. ^.^

I like the theme, but if you want a list of Characters...
Arathorn died 85 years before the war of the ring (or the return of the king movie)
Halabard dies during war of the ring (pelenor fields)
Madril dies also during the Wotr (@ osgiliath)
Boromir roughly 2 years-is before WotR
Forlong dies at the pelenor

I use a similar list, with a few more fiefdom elements.
