Sooooo...£295 (or whatever the USD equivalent is) is a fair chunk of money for a plastic toy and there is no way my darling Wife would ever let me spend that much (even on a Dragon). So here's my best alternative. Stick some wings on this bad -boy and bam: instant Smaug: http://www.warploqueminiatures.com/#!pr ... on-ancient |

What you want to do with Smaug is buy it, take it home and say to your partner how bad you feel about spending £50 on a single model! I didn't do that by the way, luckily my other half bought me mine for Christmas. |

That'd make a mighty fine Glaurung for a First Age project... |

The problem with alternatives is they just arent smaug. Smaug is from GW. |

Then again, GW Smaug represents film Smaug, and for many people, film Smaug doesn't equal image-gotten-from-book/illustrations Smaug, hence alternatives. GW Smaug's price also gets you quite some alternative dragons... For me, Smaug doesn't actually have to look very special: it's his character that sets him apart, not appearance (although a gold encrusted belly may be nice). Reaper's new Bones dragons will probablly arrive in few months, which gives a few interesting options - and all are ridiculously cheap too (15-20 USD for a decently sized dragon). Plenty old metal ones available too. Truth be told, I wouldn't want one the size of GW's figure anyway, as it would be terribly impractical to transport, game with and really quite boring to paint to be honest. |

Yeah, seen this model before and looks amazing. Too small for Smaug though but you can have it represent a regular dragon and place it on the GW oval. I would buy this to make Glaurung from the Silmarillion. I would put this last on the wishlist priority after any Hobbit miniatures you want just because of the license expiration. This dragon should be around for quite a while, especially because it is new. 130mm / 5" height, 120mm / 4" 3/4 length base (but the model itself could be much lengthier with the tail. Another one to consider, but still the size of the Lotr dragon: http://www.mierce-miniatures.com/index. ... bs_501_000 Coenus Scaldingus wrote: Plenty old metal ones available too. Links please if you have any. Totally interested in metal over resin. |

I'm sculpting my own Smaug as a way to depict the way I see him, whilst compromising somewhat with the film design and still being able to use him at events, as GW allow you to use models you have sculpted yourself |

If you are willing to wait and prefer a more archetypical dragon the Heresy one is hard to beat... http://heresyminiatures.com/shop/index. ... cts_id=260 Also the Darksword Miniatures newer one is also quite large.... http://www.darkswordminiatures.com/shop ... a-kit.html As to metal ones, the older Darksword Miniatures Dragons are all metal.... http://www.darkswordminiatures.com/shop ... ragon.html http://www.darkswordminiatures.com/shop ... ragon.html http://www.darkswordminiatures.com/shop ... ragon.html |

I'm just going to use the Smaug figure. Does anyone know the base size Smaug is on? |

the height of the miniature from the bottom of the base to the tip of Smaug’s™ wing is 8.4 inches (or 21.4 cm). The base is 9.2 inches (or 23.1 cm) long and 5.4 inches (or 13.3 cm) wide. |
