Alrighty ringers, I need some assistance from you kickass painters. Gonna be starting tauriel soon and I'm not sure how to approach her hair. GW are showing it quite brown but a lot of the movie pictures show it a fiery red. Any hints and tips? |

I don't use GW colours so can't offer you exact colours. I know the old colours if it helps. I've had a look at various images and would look to tackle a basic look as follows. The general base colour would be a bestial brown with a touch of orange mixed in, highlighting with more orange and a touch of bleached bone. The shading could be a simple wash of Devlan mud. Some glazing with something like a sepia to bring it all together. It all depends on the extent you wish to go to. |

I would start from Dark Felsh/Doombull Brown and then progressivly highlighting with a natural orange tone, such as Jokaero Orange. |

Although I've done some much more recent models with 'red' hair (makes Vikings look pretty fierce!), the only pictured one I could find is my Shieldmaiden.. painted (and photographed badly) 3.5 years ago! Redheads are probably among the trickiest to get right, mostly because you'll have to mix colour for the right basic tone. What I like to do is the following (names of the old Citadel paints, you'll probably be familiar with those): Standard mix: light reddish-brown (Bestial Brown) with some darkish orange (Blazing Orange). [strength of orange tone dependent on preference] For the first coat, mix some dark brown (Scorched Brown) in with that mix - this colour should often barely be visible, but Tauriel has a lot of texture in her hair! Colour in most of the hair with the standard mix. Add some 'blonde' (Desert Yellow) for highlights. Add a tiny bit of beige (Bleached Bone) for the final extreme highlights. Similar colours (with superiour skill!) used on these guys - not my work but Cubster's on the Warlord Games forums: As you can see, more brown on the first, more orange for the second guy. |

Does anyone know of a good way to capture this auburn color with the new GW Citadel paints? I'm afraid that I'm quite colorblind, and I rely on charts to figure out how to achieve certain effects. Oranges and Greens are difficult for me, so painting these Mirkwood Rangers is a real trick!! haha |

Start with a basecoat of Mournfang Brown followed by a wash of Carroburg Crimson. Once dry, you can wash it again with Carroburg Crimson if you're looking for more red, or move on to the next step, which is to highlight the hair in Skrag Brown. Do one final highlight in a Skrag Brown/Ushabti Bone mix. |
