i know this might be asking much, but can you tell me your techniques for painting, like do you airbrush them with a basecoat?
Also how do you get those lines between the facial marks for rumil?

plz just tell me your general step by step process, especially for the armor!

i don't use an airbrush. instead i've got a good old standard brush for everything! as for technique, i mostly use layering. that is, starting from the base colour and building up layers of progresssively thinner highlights, leaving the base colour in deep recesses. rumils face was done by starting with bestial brown, and then painting all the features flesh colours, leaving the brown lines to distinguish nose mouth etc.




right, here goes. the colours i use in order from bascoat to final highlight are:

armour: shining gold, gryphonne sepis, devlan mud, drybrush 50:50shining gold/chainmail, gryphonne sepia, devlan mud

cloaks (warriors): regal blue, enchanted blue, badab black, enchanted blue again

cloaks (guards): regal blue, enchanted blue, enchanted blue/fortress grey mix

skin: bestial brown, dwarf flesh, elf flesh

red sashes (guards): dark flesh, scab red

red tunic things (warriors): dark flesh, scab red, devlan mud, scab red again, scab red/bleached bone mix

straps: scorched brown, bestial brown

swords n' bows: scorched brown, dark flesh, details in shining gold

plumes on helmets: fortress grey, drybrush skull white

hope this helps. its reasonably quick to do if painted in batches.

i just have a couple more questions, what kind of paints do you use, GW or vallejo? Also, do you use flow aid for your paints, i just use water and this might be the problem because some of the details aren't coming out.

Lastly when you paint the armor do you just do the steps you showed me, or do you have to do any blending or layering like you also told me at the beginning of your large explanation?

thanks, i'm asking a lot for the armor, because i can't decide whether or not i should do my old technique which is to paint it shining gold, then wash it with gyph. sehp. then wash it with devlan mud, then highlight the edges with a 1:1 mixture of shining gold and mithril silver. This process, takes a long ass time!

your technique, which i tried once, but i think i may have done a too large of a drybrush, and that's why some of the detail went away.

Yes, you can say that this hobby is driving me crazy!!!

anyway thanks again for your support, i'm asking all these questions because, i've only been in the hobby for 1 year, and i want to make my soldiers look as best as they can.

just finished haldir, who has become my favourite model. here he is looking downright epic with his massive sword.


back view: im not very pleased with the cloak because its come out slightly pink rather than red. meh. im not re-doing it.

@feanorthenoldor i use gw paints and yeh, i just use water. with the armour i use the steps i mentioned, but if any detail is obscured its probably from a thick basecoat, in which case just do several thin layers of shining gold

@agincourt777 : thanks for the process notes, it really helps to see how other people do things.

Regarding pink paints: did you attempt to brighten your layers with a white? That turns red paints pink in a hurry. GW and others often use a very light brown/off white (ie bleached bone) as the final highlight, if you have some lighter pre-mixed reds they can be used as the layers.

Feanor, water is an effective flow aider, and if you do buy an actual product, make sure you dilute it-the bottle should have a good proportion. Also, if you're interesting in creating smooth layers, buying a glaze medium (Liquidex is an easy to find brand at your local craft stores) and diluting heavily will create very thin layers, as well as thinning the paint when mixed with water.
