I use Montana Gold spray paints... they are designed for graffiti artists and a far cheaper than, say, the GW equivalent (£4.99 a can).

They come in literally hundreds of colours so you can prime your miniature whatever colour you want. I've been doing my Haradrim in Wine Red and I just started a dragon undercoated with Reed.

The paint is really strong and hardwearing but does not obscure detail in any way. I only started experimenting with it recently but I have to see I am really pleased with the results!
