This only applies (that I am aware of) to those of you on one particular broadband/fibre network in the UK but it could easily happen to anyone in any country. So last night after a long and deadly dull day at work I came home, sorted out the Wargs and so on and settled down to have a nosey around all the usual internet places before resuming work on The Cunning Plan. Clicked on The One Ring and it was blocked by my ISP's Third Party provided Parental Controls service. That was annoying, especially as I had not asked for these 'controls' to be set up (there is no-one in this house remotely near child status in any jurisdiction on this planet). So then I tried a few more sites, and frankly, I wonder what convoluted logic had determined which sites to allow and which to block. For example, one well known site selling the LOTR/Hobbit replica swords etcetera was blocked, yet others selling precisely the same products were not. Rubicon - the people manufacturing some very sweet 1:56 (28mm scale) WW2 tanks - their website was fine but the forums were blocked. Animal rescue charity websites - I know the people involved in both of them - one blocked, the other was not, which is really strange as both sites specialise in one breed of dog in particular (Wargs ) I could go on and on as we tried quite a few sites and none of them are remotely dodgy in any way yet we encountered the same baffling inconsistencies in that some are permitted and other are not. I expressed my displeasure to the ISP (their ears must have been burning at the names they were getting called for about an hour last night) and switched the controls OFF permanently. I am not against the concept of these controls per se, but like everything else, if they are to be implemented, it needs to be done properly and not in what I can only assume to be a rather cackhanded piece of programming. I just though I would mention it in case anyone else ends up in the same irritating situation. |
