Someone just pointed this video to me. Someone asks George RR Martin (author of the Song of Ice and Fire novels) his opinion about who would win in a fight between some of his characters and some of Lord of the Rings.

Video can be found here.

For some reason I totally agree with GRR on the question Frodo vs Tyrion. :D Frodo is nothing compared to him :P
and correct me if I'm wrong but glamdring does not glow when orc are near right? That was sting. Glamdring is just an awesome sword.

Glamdring did glow blue in the presence of orcs. As did Anduril.
And... so did pretty much every blade of elven origin or forging.

In the DVD commentary of Fellowship, Peter Jackson says that Glamdring didn't glow in the film because of an oversight—not a specific design decision.

Glamdring was found in the same place as Sting, and both of the swords are High-Elven swords, so I suppose both should glow.

Orcrist also glowed - it was the partner sword of Glamdring, both made for the King of Gondolin.
This is like comparing hats and socks - meaningless. These are two different fantasy worlds, written in very different styles. GRR based a lot of his ideas on the War of the Roses and other medieval/early Renaissance history. It is gritty and visceral in many places, whereas Tolkien was exploring language, philosophy and religion in a fantastic setting, more of a mythology.
You might as well throw Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica and the A-team in for good measure. Just because GRR and JRR wrote about swords, dragons, castles and banners does not make them remotely comparable.
If it came down to which character out of any of the worlds I would want beside me in a fight, I would trust Aragorn further than any of the connivers in the GRR universe.

And Mister T would refer to me as 'Another crazy Fool'

Ha ha. That was quite amusing, fair play to GRR for playing along sportingly.

The coolest crossover fight would be The Witch King vs Darth Vader.

Sauron vs Voldemort. Just to see Voldemort slaughtered.

Great film, btw.

Ya, Voldemort wouldn't stand a chance against Sauron OR Darth Vader.

Darth Vader would lose to Voldemort because he doesn't have any means to destroy his horcruxes

EDIT: Also, GRRM is awesome.

But Tolkien has Ringwraiths and Werewolves

Pretty sure a lightsaber could destroy a horcrux. And he would just force pull Voldemort's wand out of hand, rendering him ineffective. Don't start a geek based Dark Lord war with me :)

GRRM is great, and I love the ASIOAF world - but I think his writing is not as good as Tolkien's, especially plot-wise. Sometimes I get the idea he does things totally at random

(why for God's sake would Littlefinger want Joffrey dead? Just because.)

EDIT: Spoilered after GtW's comment, sorry!

Lightsabers arer not one of the few magically powerful and destructive spells and items (eg basilisk venom, fiendfyre) so he would fail miserably.

A lightsaber obviously works off of magic, otherwise the laser would be both invisible and would keep going on and on forever. Besides, The Force is better than any spell. It's in everything, thus can be used to destroy anything.

No, lightsabers work because the plot wouldn't be as typically American otherwise. Just like the rest of Star Wars...

I hear the distant sound of JRRT spinning in his grave...
Getting a bit off this (mad) topic. I maintain that the JRR characters are more noble and dependable whereas the GRR are more conniving and selfish, willing to cheat and betray to win. Maybe GRR's guys would win some battle that way but they would fail ultimately as they would not hold their own alliances together long enough to secure ultimate victory.

Except for the Starks, because they aren't bright enough to betray anyone (they didn't see the Red Wedding coming) and the Martells, because no-one notices they're backstabbing everyone.

So both the Starks and Martells are predictable. Very easy to defeat with a little creative strategy.

Oh, no. The Martells are anything but predictable. Even Tywin Lannister thinks he's got them in his pocket (rather dumb of him really, but anyway), and secretly they're plotting to get the Targaryens back, which truly no-one expected.

Tywin Lannister who got shot in the gut with a crossbow while in the privy... I wouldn't rate him as a strategist or a tactician, just a wealthy ambitious git.
