Ok, I'm assuming most people have seen Desolation of Smaug so hopefully this won't be any type of spoiler...

When Bilbo is fighting the Giant Spiders and falls and loses The Ring, he brutally kills a spider who approaches The Ring. This spider, though, is quite different than the others. Has there been any explanation on any of the production blogs or anything like that about why this one was made differently? I kind of liked the design, and would love a mini of it to be made (little to no chance of that, but maybe they'll release a small "Fine"cast set like Riddles in the Dark.)

There was. There is debate (amongst us) if it's trapdoor spider or something else. I'm personally in the first camp

Ah, ok no wonder I hadn't seen it then.

Opinion still seems to be quite divided over what it really is. All I know is it's creepy! Lol

Its mouth is different from a spider's, so I personally think it's a centipede... or something similiar.

Damn, I hate centipedes. No wonder that thing freaked me out!

Centipede. Just rewatch the scene on youtube and you will see it.
Not very Middle-earthy.

I disagree; the entirety of mirkwood is under the influence of Dol Guldur, it would likely affect Centipedes as well.

Have you seen Azog's ego and temper, The Dark Lord has his minions on cocaine, and by the size of them I would also have to agree mega-roids going on there

But Roids don't bulk you up, they cause you to be able to gain muscle faster by allowing for quicker recovery.
Obviously Sauron uses MiracleGrow(TM) lol

they do seem to work out a lot, the gear those orcs carry around and fight with got to be pretty hench to deal with that, especially alot of those impractical fantasy weapons....

But seriously that centipede was one of my favourite bits in the film.

Peter Jackson uses the same idea's a lot, I think this creature was from the King Kong movie PJ made and had it left over. That is why Bilbo (Martin) was so disgusted because it was a bad King Kong prop and now was being used in a spider scene of the Hobbit as if there were not enough spiders to fight that they needed something else thrown in. Just kidding. I think people dwell to much on this one bit of a scene and not enough on the other bits of the film. I for one want to start a thread on how the orcs bang the metal plates into Azogs scars to make his armor and if it hurts (like he is a pain addict) and if it will look as bad as Bolgs armor does. But I am not that interested, :-D
