Doesn't look like an Extended Edition is identified yet, but maybe I scanned right past it. But at least we can get our fix with the Theatrical versions in just over a month.

Pretty sure that PJ already confirmed an October release of the EE. I know it's going to have 25 extra minutes. The article you posted says that the EE will be out in time for the holidays, aka the general release time frame for DoS.

Could you not use the acronym DoS. Could you say TH:DOS instead? For people familiar with ASOIF, it means "Dream of Spring" - and that title has been announced a lot earlier.

This is NOT a Game of Thrones site (I know that's just the first book's title), so you should make the assumption that I am refering to the Desolation of Smaug.

Yep...and as posted at the top for anyone REALLY anxious you can download it early. And you'll get a code to a live media stream with PJ including a sneak peak of DoS. The sneak peak will be available, edited down, for later viewing by the world.

I'm definitely going to hold out until the Extended for a purchase, though I'm sure I'll be renting the theatrical at least a couple times over the summer. :-)

I will wait for the Extended edition Blu-ray but another family member will get the basic dvd when it is released so my cravings can be assuaged with an elegant sufficiency of Hobbitness during the interminable interlude.

No acronyms were harmed in the typing of this post. :)

As Draugluin said, this is a Middle-earth forum. Here, for example, WotR means 'War of the Ring', but if I went to an historical wargaming forum, it would mean 'War of the Roses'. :)

Can't wait, will be buying both versions. I need the theatrical for paint reference. I just hope the theatrical is still good compared to the extended edition. The LOTR EE's were so much better then the originals I don't even watch the theatrical editions anymore

Is it too much to hope for an Extended Blu Ray?

We must do without hope. At least we may yet be avenged!

Oh...that may not have been right. Whatever.

Seriously though, Extended Edition BR will probably come in October. As with the LotR I'm going to guess any bonus features, behind the scenes, etc. will continue to be DVD quality, but the full blown Extended Edition of the film should be BR. I'm really looking forward to seeing how it comes out (and REALLY hoping they continue the special box versions with the Weta statues!!!! 8) )
