What's your favorite hero battle in LOTR, and what, in your opinion, is the worst part? By hero battle I mean....err....a battle between heroes and named bad guys.

Please post too, explaining why.

My favorite is Aragorn vs. The Nine. I love that part. One man facing down five of the Dark Lord's finest....it's truly epic. :D

And if your favorite hero duel isn't on the list, feel free to post it anyway!
:-D

Aragorn versus Lurtz, of course!

The Witch King's death is quite dull of a scene acording to me, she just keeps dodging, gets hit once and breaks her arm, then pippin pokes him in the back and she puts her blade in his face...

Weathertop is... well, too little fencing and too much Aragorn raging. Besides I dislike to see it from Frodo's eyes when they're white.

Aragorn versus Lurtz is a real fight, Lurtz isn't pwn'd, he almost kills Aragorn atleast twice. And Lurtz doesn't care about his arm being chopped off, he just squeezes himself deeper onto Aragorns sword, just to growl in his face before he's decapitated. And I LOVE the shield-throw =P

Aragorn's throw of the torch at the last Nazgul is just as cool, in my opinion. He times it perfect.... :D

Who fences in LOTR? . They swordfight!

Fencing is people in poofy leggings using overlong needles to fight.

Aragorn vs. Lurtz is pretty cool, though. :yay: . I like it when Lurtz yanks the knife out of his thigh.

I meant fencing as in parrying alot rather than just charging in and chopping them in half.

Yeah, Aragorn's toss is pretty nice, but if that's cool - then what ain't the shield throw?! Swoooosh-Chunk! I love Aragorn's face just before he manages to pull out his head as Lurtz's scimtar comes along the shield's back. xD

As a medieval weapons obsessist, I must say one last thing. Lurtz is wielding a falchion, not a scimitar. 8)

Lurtz would have been a great discus thrower.... :(

well in LOTR Id go for Glorfindel versus The Nine

wider I'd put my vote on Fingolfin vs Bauglir
or Tùrin vs Glaurung
(Tùrin vs Beleg made great story as well, but is not quite good vs evil)

If it's got an elaborate basket hilt and a very long blade, it counts as a rapier :P

a swords a sword. if it was wooden and you could sit on it, it would be a chair, which is something totally different, but since it IS a sword, why go into specifics? sword is as good a word as any!

i like sauron vs the Itty bitty alliance of elves and men committee.

Aragorn vs Lurtz was a good scene from the films, especially as it was at the culmination of a long fight sequence involving most of the Fellowship. It gave the film a great climax.

Lurtz was a good character in the film and gave the fight a focus and counter-point after the loss of Merry and Pippin - a minor victory after a disastrous encounter.

The Encarta World English Dictionary wrote:
rapier: sword with long slender blade

Different balance and mass to a hand-and-a-half/two-handed sword altogehter, so different fighting style required.

...Back on topic, I prefer Shelob vs. Sam- he did very well against near-impossible odds.

I like either Aragorn vs. Lurtz or the wizard fight at Orthanc.

And as for the whole fencing thing, one of the wraiths uses a longsword with a small whole to put the pointer finger through, which would have the sword being held with a more fencing posture. Sure it's not a fencing rapier, but it's a longsword used to fence with.

I voted for Aragorn Vs. The Nine. Becuase he did that cool fencing (I fence) sword fight and he was fighting with fire!
