My first impression of him was his massive size, I was expecting something more the size of Draco from Dragonheart, boy was I wrong. As the title says, how the hell is GW going to do this? They going to release a pair of legs one dragon base each foot and call it good? Forgeworld seems to be the only real option...and I'm doubting they'll even attempt it.

Like the mumak, they'll scale it way down. It'll still be huge though.

Not as huge as the pricetag...

I have a feeling that it will be the biggest model they will do. I can't see Forge World doing anything to do with LOTR or the Hobbit as it's a separate part of the company, and only deals with the 40k and WFB stuff (with the notable exception of the Watchtower)

But you're right, no matter how big it is, it will have a sky high price. If the normal Dragon is £44 in finecast, think what a Dragon 2/3x times the size will cost, even in plastic.

ASs the avengers says.

SMAUG WILL BE SCALED DOWN JUST LIKE ALL OF THEIR LARGE MONSTERS IN PARTICULAR THE MUMAK AND BALROG.

Funny noone mentions the Stone Giants.

Also, I barely read your post so as to avoid any spoilers, but I goot the general jist, and the answer to that is simple.

And of course the price will be huge. Don't expect Smaug to cost less than £60.

I think though it depends on how well their current stuff sells. If the Hobbit game sells poorly, as some have imagined, then I doubt that they'll make a massive kit.

Even if its scaled down, inevitably, the Mumak is pretty close already to its proper size.

No it isn't. The Muak is between 1/2 and a 1/4 of the size it should be.

I'm basing that off the dead mumak that was an actual prop, not the cgi ones that changed size throughout the scene. Look at the foot next to the actors and then look at the miniatures, the difference is negligible.

I am basing it on the facts that

a) The Mukak's feet are about the same size as a horse.

b) The Howdah can comfortably fit 4 times as many Haradrim in the Howdah. (The reason I said 2-4 times is because of the bases)

Just going to ignore the comment about the bases, could only find this pic if the dead one, the foots pony sized. Never said out was the right size, but within 25 more mass is close enough for me. Otherwise it'd be hard to play with.

Talking to one of my GW buddies rumor at corporate is they're going Resin, I said that's crazy, but it makes sense. They'll be able to produce it for alot less then if they went plastic.

A lot less...? Not money for us!? Maybe for them, but I see GWS doing it cheap, charging a fortune, but we will see, so far some of the Hobbit and old LotR stuff are just crazy prices!

Firstly, read my post, i said I was discounting bases.

Secondly, I meant the height of the foot, not the width of it,

Thirdly, ompare that photo to the Mumak, thre Mumak in that photo is easily twice the size.

Never mind.

ON TOPIC: Smaug will probably be in Finecast. At least that is what I would have said before they released Bert, Will and Tom in plastic even though you can only have one of each. So who knows now.

It will probably be outrageous in price, just like with finecast they're producing the same figure, charging more, but it costs less to make. They could do a humongous Smaug in resin and it would cost them so much less than if they went plastic, but neither scenario benefits us. He'll probably be at least $ 150, that's being generous. I'm expecting in the $200-300 range. Which I'm ok with if its the biggest possible version and is amazing.

One other option could be the toyline. The bridge direct will probably make a decent sized Smaug figure and if GW decide to go massively undersized with theirs, could with some customizing and paint be a viable option.

Sadly I think it's going to be a failure on the table. It will have to be significantly more potent than the existing dragon profile considering how it is shown in the film and book.

Historically such models are just not fun on the table for one side or the other (or both). They might be able to pull it off but it's going to take a lot of play testing. And what would the points of something that potent be? 1000 points...maybe more? If they under cut it's potency it's going to disappoint.

If it is a good profile afterall I have a feeling getting one of the plastic toy ones (sure to be showing up at your local Toys R Us and Walmart) will probably be a more cost-effective option.

A.

This is something I thought about, 'would they release a mini and what would the stats be like?'. I haven't got the new rulebook yet but there has been no mention of any stone giant stats and I was slightly disappointed to hear it. I thought the model of a stone giant would be taller than a mumak.

{SPOILER}
The small glimpses we had of Smaug in the movie does make me think it would be one massive dragon for GW to build and it might make the current dragon look like a baby.

The Balrog pretty much single handedly destroyed Khazad-Dum, which was a MUCH greater kingdom than Erebor and he's only 400 points.

As for the mumak, the current mini would be about 30-40 feet tall. To the top of it's back is ~6in (it's actually 5.5, but if it were standing straight, it would be 6). 1 inch ingame equals about 6 feet (Lurtz is about an inch, and the actor who played him is 6'3") so the Mumak would 36 ft tall. Mumak's were described as being about 50-75 ft tall, so the current mini is about 1/2 scale.

Described in the book? Because they weren't in the movie, can't cross compare like that accurately.
Back to Smaug, even if they did him half size he'd be bigger than the Forgeworld Fire Dragon, and I'd be ok with that

Smaugh will fit mumak´s base size, there isn´t base bigger than that in GW base sizes.
how big he is? quite, but they make it life half its real size, along with wings and tail over passing the base´s edge
price? most likely like the goblin town set for 1 model or a bit more like a warhammer 40k plastic baneblade... be surprised :P
is there rules for smaug on rulebook anyway?

I was chatting with some of the guys in my local GW store about Smaug and his possibilities, we concluded (of course this is speculation) that he would be a plastic kit, and indeed will be bigger than the mumak with a truly massive wing span and probably cost in the region of £100!!!!
