Yes, this is it. Personally I think this was a great release. We received two amazing new plastics which are the closest to multi-part plastics LoTR has ever come. All of the metal miniatures are decent, some good even.

I agree some new Elf stuff would be nice. I'd love plastic High Elves, High Elf Knight's and even Rivendell Guard metal blisters. I think a three man blister of Rivendell Guard would be great for giving the Elve's a little more diversity in SBG. :)

I'd like to see the stone giant though, but I guess that's with the hobbit release.

yes, I'd love to see a new SBG book, but probably that's not going to happen, since the books will (aparently) be mail order soon..

That says nothing. They could just as well go for a WoTR formulae for SBG. Release a single rulebook with all the stats. And no longer focus on thematic booklets. I'd love to see them do that.

I hope not.

In fact, I hope we aren't going to wait for any hobbit releases since it will be quite a long time before that movie is realized.

MGM has put the latest bond movie on hold indefinitely and the hobbit is looking to be thrown in limbo as well.

I really hope that any release for figs for which we currently have rules for doesnt get held back until then, because it really wont be worth the wait.

GW have literary rights so they wont need to wait, and frankly I think I would rather see a more creative take on models surrounding that book than what PJ is going to force upon the masses.

Yep will be a while out. Because WoTR = more miniatures to sell.
But in turn it would be a nice boost in cash when they do such a thing.
And one game would promote the other.

Definately going in the right direction with the plastic kits, in every new plastic kit, they become more and more multipose/part. really good. Shame about the price difference from the old cavalry though, its the main reason why i won't be buying either of them.

Ruins were a good idea, some good constructable terrain is always a nice thing and something that the Lotr range lacks....

Some other good Uruks, a poor sloppy ranger captain (his face is bad!). Good release though on the whole...

And no...not buying that book either...hehe.

Well the new plastic knights are stunning! Fantastic to have these guys (and their commands) in plastic, though it's a shame GW aren't bothering with their non-mounted counterparts and it's a bit annoying that they don't come pre-pegged...

The ruins are super, it's brilliant a new LOTR scenery set has been released.

Duinhir and his command are great models, it's good that the normal plastic rangers can be used as his archers - with a little bit of work (i.e. adding some chain mail to them all) they'll fit together nicely and it'll save on buying lots of blisters of special models. It's also handy that you have the option of using the new miniatures with normal rangers or the Grey Company - nice versatility!

Mauhúr's command look brilliant; very nice poses. Can't say the same for Mauhúr himself - that hair style will have to go for a start - but with a little work he should turn out pretty good too.

The new model for Faramir looks pretty good. I don't think the paint job or angle of the picture help very much but if he is a bit on the big side he could make a pretty nice mounted Forlong the Fat!

And the new expansion itself is great, some good ideas in there.

A SUPERB release, :yay: well done GW (but please sort out the painting next time)!

Oh, I forgot about the "The Dwimmerlaik"... better leave it that way...

I got a quick look at the book on saturday, and on the whole was quite impressed. The new fortunes and fates are actually more realm-specific, such as the horn of gondor.
Dwarves have two reasonably good ones, but nothing special.
Gorgoroth Orc orc is MASSIVELY good.
Dol Amroth got lucky with this as well.
Elves got one which lets elrond's company(or was it his formation?) choose if they want priority (I think)

If your GW lets you look at the book it is a MUST SEE for wotr players.

And that's my two cents(or four)

Pretty sure this is what the Galadrhim sets represent, isn't it? I always assumed that the FotR-era ones were First-Age Elves, and the Gals were Third-Age ones.

No those are Galadhrim and Galadhrim Knights. The High Elves represent the Elves hailing from the Elf Haven's, Rivendell and the Grey Haven's mainly.

A new High Elf box would be nice, seeing as the spearmen are currently only available in metal and the others have to be purchased along with the Numenorean's. High Elf Knights were in LoME, yet I'm not sure if they're in WotR, if not it's doubtful they'll ever be released.

I am taking Dwarf Host of Erebor! :D Any of my formation's courage cannot be modified (down) within 12 inches of Dain. It also allows me to make Will of Iron on a 3+ instead of 4+. Shutting down the magic

I am also taking Gold Lust Fortune, so I can have 6 indomitable Khazad Guard Formations. My gaming club will have fun with that!!

If you looked at the book check out Mordor and Angmar. Both have the best formations IMO.

With Mordor you can take Gorogarth 18 Company Ork Mob. You can also take an all Troll Formation!!! :o The Trolls can re-roll hits (If I Remember Correctly) and the captain can re roll the heroic duel table once!! And if thats not enough they now have tons of others that are great, like the siege formation and the Flying Nazgul one too!

Angmar got 2 good formations (out of 3). One Formation is a spirit host that has a shade but the shade does not affect the ghosts. It also incorporates either (or Both) the dwimmerlaik and Tainted. The Other Formation is Bruhdur's Troll Formation. You take Bhrudur and up to 6 Cave Trolls, and Possibly some Wargs, Goblins, and Orks. This entire Formation can Ambush and has the Prowler special rule!!!!! :) Imagine it... Stealthy Cave Trolls jumping out a forest and destroying some puny elves.

In a Edition I also like the Fiefdoms of Gondor Formation, though most of it would be metal so its super expensive :x IF I had the money I would take it!!!

All in All its much clearer and detailed the War of The Ring Book 8)

GW's interpretation has varied wildly over time, and usually defaults to what is most profitable ;)

When "Shadow and Flame" came out, one of the cooler adventures to run was "Surrounded" which explicitly called for the figures we now call Galadhrim to represent Glorfindel's elven allies. Later, when the One Rulebook came out, the Elves were divided into seperate tribes - The Woodland Realm, Lorien and the Elven Havens. The Woodland Realm was Mirkwood, the Elven Havens the High Elven sanctuaries of Rivendell and the Grey Havens. The Elven Havens was represented by the guys from the Last Alliance set. The movies don't shed any light on the issue, and while the possibly-drawn-from-WETA-design-notes Weapons and Warfare book sort of implies the Lorien Elves/Galadhrim were Sindarin warriors and sort of implies that their armour had evolved from the original Last Alliance era armour, there's no clear canonical (either movie or book) answer. Interestingly, the Decipher Lord of the Rings card game represents Elladan and Elrohir wearing "Galadhrim" type armour.

(There were also some rumour we would see more elves in the Return of the King movie, so GW may have decided just to "hold fire" and wait)

GW finally "decided" their answer when they released Elladan and Elrohir wearing Last Alliance type armour. Thus in GW land, the Second Age Elves are Rivendell Elves. The armoured Lorien Elves are "Galadhrim" and the Wood Elves are everyone else. Interestingly the Hobbit clearly mentions the presence of Wood Elves in Rivendell - but the Legions of Middle Earth forbade Rivendell from having Wood Elves. This was in contradiction to the earlier White Dwarf issued set of army lists.

So between Battlehosts and The War of the Ring, they've come the entire way back again and given us...Elves. Figure the rest out yourselves :D

So, in the end, it makes a certain sort of sense to have a visually distinct High Elf force (2nd Age Elves)

I took a quick look at the book and read Isengard's siege battlehost and it said that the player could choose to use the ballista to raise ladders on defending structures etc. However, there aren't any rules whatsoever about using siege ladders in WOTR (that I'm aware of). I asked the gw worker, and he basically said just make up some house rules for using them

Great work GW 8)

Lol. They probably copy and pasted the rules from SBG and then altered them a bit for that.

It actually says "... any infantry that charge the same target that turn will count as having the Siege Ladders Fate (see page 57)".
That fate doesn't actually include ladders, but mearly a bonus for fighting enemies occupying buildings/ruins.

DainIronfoot: The no Courage moderation effect sounds like Stubborn in Warhammer and, in fact, the Erebor list sounds like it is trying to get closer tot he way Warhammer Dwarves are represented, lol :D Still, sounds great to me :P

If the Ballista is said to count as having the Siege Ladders Fate, then it doesn't mean that they actually have ladders (although for modelling purposes, it would make sense), but it gives them the same bonuses as the Fate does ;)

Thranduil's Host can ambush in forests! Bhurdur's Trolls against Thranduil's Host could mean a very tactically demanding battle!

lol thats not 'warhammerizing' the dwarves. Thats just the way the dwarves are portrayed in the books, extremely stubborn, tenacious and resistant to the powers and will of other minds (aka magic) warhammer dwarfs are the ones the are copied from tolkiens dwarves, not the other way around
