The official trailer is out 7pm PST, so I guess it should be on the Hobbit site tomorrow

OK, looks pretty cool. But what are the ruins Gandalf is wandering around in in a couple places? Anyone have any guesses.

Also, I don't think it is going to be showing up until the second movie.

I mean, that's all I can think those scenes might be too, but that is not at all what I think Dol Guldor is supposed to look like.

You know, from the 8 seconds of clips we've seen so far. :)

The REAL trailer! I am pretty sure that is Dol Guldur. In the Hobbit, Gandalf talks about how he went into Dol Guldur in secret to check if the Necromancer was Sauron, and there he found Thrain with the map and the key to the Lonely Mountain. It is probably a flashback. The reason it is in ruins is because it has been abandoned for a long time, and only recently Sauron has returned to Dol Guldur.

Thanks!

Maermaethor.

Gandalf goes to Dol Guldur pre the Hobbit, which is where he gets the map of The Lonely Moutain from Thrain, so it could be a sort of prequel. But I'd expect to see a much more formidable DG in the second movie when Sauron has had a chance to spruce the place up a bit

Gandalf went there to investigate and found Thrain. That's where he got the map and key that allowed success in the raid on Lonely Mountain. That all happened before the first Dwarf showed up at Bilbo's house so it is perfectly reasonable for the first movie. It could be prequel or even flashback when Gandalf tells someone about it, or a mix of both (similar to how the battle of the Last Alliance was shown both in the beginning of the film and filled out a little more when Gandalf and Elrond spoke of the weakness of Men later).

As I posted in another thread on this topic though...

Thrilled but also very nervous about one thing...an axe in Bifur's head???? WTF? It's already a "children's story". I know they are bumping it up to adult levels (thank Eru) but we already have the ready-made comic relief of Bombur. Do we really need a stupid ploy like an axe stuck in someone's head? That's old-school BBC humor (nothing wrong with that...I grew up on 70s / 80s BBC shows...but NOT HERE!)

Well never mind, It's worth waiting for! It looks so good and detailed! Just hope Peter Jackson kept in mind all details of the book, which I doubt looking back at the LOTR trilogy

Shame isn't it? The confirmed date has been December 2012 for a while now.

I have already waited 37 years for this, so one more is not a huge problem. Just torture, really.... and then part 2 in 2012!

(Silmarillion in 5 parts, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 please)

Part 2 is in 2013. And yes to Silmarillion! Though I think it would be better as a tv miniseries like Band of Brothers.
